There were three iron propellor blades west of the pier, the tips had been broken off and refitted using a rivited brass plate. The late Marcus Georgeson told me they were from trawler, he remembered it happening when he was around 10 or 11 which would have made it around 1920 to 23. I have looked through old copies of the Shetland Times and Shetland News in the mid eighties but I didn't find any mention of it. I also asked Alastair W. McRobb who wrote the Story of the North of Scotland Orkney Shipping Company about the rumour that a North Boat lost a prop and he hadn't heard anything about it. There is still a story about a North Boat losing a prop east of the pier but I have not been able to find any proof of this. _________________ Patience isn't a virtue, it's a waste of time

What became of the business records of the North of Scotland when they were taken over? A call to P&O Archives might point in the right direction, I would think an incident of that nature if it happened, would be well recorded, assuming the papers still exist.
Remember too that the North of Scotland weren't the only islands' shipping company back then, there was also the short lived 'Shetland Islands Steam Trading Company' who had the 'Norseman' steamer from around 1904. _________________ My other I.D. is the Troll.
I have been in touch with P & O archives and they emailed back to say the North of Scotland Orkney and Shetland Steam Navigation Company records were deposited with Aberdeen University Library by P & O, this is a link to them:-
