I've been to Mareel twice now.

Once to the cinema - which in my humble opinion was all that we needed. It was a very pleasant experience, although 'Do not bring food not purchased at Mareel' is a bit of a cheek I think.

The second time was on Friday night to the auditorium for a Zumbathon in aid of Breakthrough Breast Cancer. The floor was sticky and in my opinion dangerous for a dance exercise class. The staff said 'It's been mopped several times, all we can do is apologise.' which at least acknowledged the problem - which apparently had been a problem for a week! I don't know if the problem is the type of flooring or what was spilled on it the previous Friday but I would suggest they need to get it sorted!

Not bringing in your own food is standard in any establishment that sells food and only fair. With luck it will keep down on the folk who used to come to the Garrison and share out - not kidding - a carrier bag of packets of crisps among them. The good thing about cinema food is it is designed to be non-noisy, and Mareel's isn't so oversized or expensive as most cinemas.

That said, it shouldn't be hard to sneak in our own food as long as long as we are discreet, quiet and tidy, and I may well be tempted to on occasion.

*Mareel have contacted me today to say that they will not be charging for the hire of the venue due to the state of the floor. So all hire costs can now go to Breakthrough Breast Cancer.*

Well done Mareel on not charging for the auditorium. Good news for the fundraiser too.

On the food front - never been stopped from taking my own sweets into the cinema anywhere else.

Apologies if this has been discussed in the 148 previous pages.

Haven't they made a marketing mistake by not including a proper working kitchen to cater for sit down meals e.g for weddings etc.?
Having been in the trade I can say with certainty that outside catering has its place but loses something when you are looking for something with a bit more pzazz.
I was dumbfounded to hear it can't do this sort of catering.

I think the originol plans included a restaurant but this did not go ahead due to complaints from local businesses.

I have heard a lot of chat on here about taking your own food into the cinema. What is the deal with that? Who honestly thinks that is acceptable? Genuinely?

I lived south for years and you don't take your own food to the cinema unless it was sneaked in. It would be like taking food into a cafe! Both establishments rely on food sales for income. Why would they let you take your own food in? Some of the complaints on this forum are laughable quite frankly.

Neon Lights has a point re being on par with taking your own food into a cafe. However, as the clip posted by Hector's House demonstrates, many cinemas charge extortionate prices for the refreshments.

I don't think a ban (as mentioned in the youchoob clip) is fair but could understand them confiscating the snacks. However, perhaps Mareel management will take note of the comments concerning how the price of snacks might dissuade families from visiting due to the cost implications? As someone else mentioned, if there are 2 adults, 2 children and everyone has refreshments, it can be an expensive night out.

How about a royalty card? This could be along the same lines as some of the coffee outlets. Say on each occasion you purchased popcorn/coke/whatever, you got your card stamped. When the card was full, it entitled you to a free item of a set value.

What you could do, like we used to do when we went to expensive clubs was to have some cheep stuff b4 we went, perhaps, stuffing your face at the Fort than having 3 necked pints at the Marlex before you go perhaps...
