The way the international system for bank debt works, Scotland would have nothing like the debt you talk about as most of it was accrued in London and as such would stay there. If through some unbelievable agreement to bring it north it did end up in Scotland we we would want our share of the assets as well as the liabilities which more than covers the debt.

The rest of your points are equally ridiculous for anyone who is interested in facts but there are plenty of places for this type of discussion.

I have no intention of hijacking this forum which is about the Shetlands to debate the Scottish independence case. I came here to learn about the movement for Shetlands independence.

My apologies to any Shetlanders for bringing this to your board.

The people of Iceland didnt welsh on anything it was not them that went bust but the banks.I also believe they are in the process of putting the guilty parties in jail where they belong not handing them billions of pounds like the UK has .

Iceland owes nothing to the UK and the Netherlands .Banks that were based in Iceland do.Again the people of Iceland owe nothing.Why should they bail out a failed commercial enterprise if capitalism is working correctly they simply go bust and the people who invested with them in their various ponzi schemes lose their dosh.It seems that unlike in other countries ours included the politicians in Iceland are not in the pocket of the bankers.

Yes, very surprising but equally welcome.

I happened to hear the dinner time news today and there was a snippet of Alex Salmond speaking about the prospect of strike action on the ferries.

However, what stuck out for me was the fact that he almost didn't even know what to call us and fumbled his way through the "Northern Is...lands"

Sadly, I think Edinburgh itself and the SNP have shown in the years of devolution that they offer us little hope.....

Don't expect any support or even fair reporting of what Shetland might do in the advent of an independant Scotland from wir own local media.

I noticed in The Shetland Times this week that the visit to the Isle of Man by non less than Tavish Scott and Malcolm Bell barely recieved a mention and was buried on p6.

Meanwhile a rescued dog recieved half a page with a photo on p3.....
