My Great Uncle in Australia rectently asked me if anyone in Wethersta saw the "Trowie Light" anymore. Apparently sometimes at night a steady light would appear at the top of the ness and moved own to the sea, disapearing in a bluish light as it entered the water. I have spoken to a few people who have seen it and remember it well. My dad has lived in the area all his life and thinks it is rubbish, it has not been seen for many years.

I have notes somewhere regarding Wethersta folk enquiring about the light to Grobsness folk. The Grobsness folk could offer no explanation but mentioned seeing a similar light at near the Pitt croft in Wethersta.

Perhaps the trow is too old now to be wandering around at night down to the sea with his lantern and prefers to sit in his knowe and watch TV of an evening.

In response to technobob - I did say it was long ago and it was well known to the people who actually lived in the area and was told to me by reliable folk who lived in Cole. There were families who did have problems there certainly prior to the families you mention , Maybe its no scooby doo land to you but I'd bet du widna want tae wander about in da dark dere for ower lang !!!!

Regardin Grobsness, I agree, there's something aboot it dats brawly spooky, likely all da ruined hooses, especially da Haa!. I mind hearin a story about an old hoose on the opposite side o da hill fae da hoose dat's still inhabited, I think it might o had a tree ootside, canna mind da exact story though.

Waddersty, maybe da Trow doesna need his light onymare, da pointless street lights on da 'industrial estate' will maybe guide his way, or he maybe doesna lik wir music..., widna be da 1st een! . I'll be keepin a look oot for him anyway....

I'm been tae Windhouse in Yell twartree times when I was a bairn. It's brawly spooky when you're inside. Wan time I saw a skeleton under da stairs an ran ootside screaming!!

Well well isn't this a fine collection of ghostly goings on from around the isles? After reading I felt that I needed to share my local supernatural knowledge such as it is.

In regards to Windhoose, I spent many a summer raking aroond there and we never saw anything more sinister than a decaying sheep. I did, however hear a story that dogs would point blank refuse to go through a passage that would have led from the kitchen to the main house. I know some people are sceptical about animals and their ESP but if a dog won't go somewhere I sure as hell won't either!!

Many years ago I heard tales of the Gair shop and it's bizarre security camera happenings. I'm fuzzy on the details now but I can mind it gluffing the bejesus oot o me at the time!!

Can't help, sorry. The nearest thing I ever saw round that part of the street looking like a ghost, was a baker or two from Malcolmson's going home at the back of dinner time with a dumba of flour shaking or blowing off them....

Seems the ghosts only got going in the 80's once it was no longer Stove & Smith's, I knew quite a lot of folk who worked round that part of the street in the later 70's in the latter days of Stove & Smith, and never heard anything about ghosts ever mentioned.

The story about the man that appears in your car at the sand water junction happened to a friend off mine.

She was traveling from south to north at 03:00am in the morning on her own. When she was approaching the sand water juntion there was a man in oilskins standing at the end off the road as she drove past she looked in her rear view mirror but he had gone. Then there was a very strong smell off fish in the car and when she looked in the mirror he was sitting in the back seat off the car.

She was a bit shaken up to say the least.

I was at the wind house early-ish on a winter evening and me and an ex-gf went up to it for a peerie look around. We got close and something ran straght past me at knee level and almost knock me off my feet! I could hear low, gutteral noise from inside. Trying to look brave for my ex I went up to see what it was, when... AN F'N RAM RAN OUT PAST ME AND I ALMOST POOPED MY PANTS AGAIN!!!!!!!

I too would like to hear the real story, and more Lerwick paranormal stuff. There must be loads to tell. I've heard about tesco's site being haunted - it does have a bit of a negative vibe to the place, but haunted I don't know. The Legion and it's Grey lady/man? can anyone enlighten us?
Hayfield House and it's reapearing bloodstains - not sure if this was a windup though. Monfield Hospital's unused ward/area? The slamming of doors there, is this true? One day to Halloween, I hope somebody can tell us some more stories.
I spent an afternoon reading this forum last year with much interest. Learnt alot about the isles odd happenings.
I was at the Windhoose last year, and didn't find it particularly scarey. It was a bit of a trek to get to it (was muddy and wet), so was a little dissapointed that i didn't really even feel any vibes or anything! Just an old dilapidated house. Took some photies. It would be Spooky to look at, after sundown I would imagine though.

Windhoose tale.

I took a group of pupils there last summer. At midnight. On a dreich, misty night.
They (and some of the staff) had been psyching themselves up for some time beforehand as to what they would see or experience.

Making our way around the outside of the fence we saw several black mounds up by the fence at the rear.

Someone (could've been me, but dinna think so) in an effort to spookify things suggested that they could be newly dug graves - one for each of the 10 of us.

So one of the staff started counting.
"One, two, three, four...there'd better not be ten...five, six, seven, eight, nine, oh bloody hell!!!"

Of course we just had to take a closer look...and discovered 10 heavily decayed black bales of silage.

Never mind - some of the party carried on around to the back of the house and one staff member and one pupil were peering over the dyke when...Whooosh...a bird shot out from the foliage just at their feet, obviously having been disturbed by their presence and causing a major adrenalin surge in those closest.

Apart from that I didn't see anything but it was interesting to see how people behaved given the lead-up to the visit.

Da story read on Radio Shetland wis meant tae a been written some 50 years eftir da events described, so hit's by no means an eye witness account. I gied wi Mike ta look at da aald schoolhoose afore we recorded da story, an dere wis nothin you could really caa an 'ill feelin' or 'ooriness' aboot it, just da shell o an aald buildin. On da tidder haand, hit's no unusual fir a storyteller ta stretch time a peerie bit. Ta say dat sic-an-sic a thing happend "aboot a hunder year ago" or "at da turn o da hidmost century" adds a weight o years an' a bit o respectability tae a story. No only dat, hit taks awaa argument. Unlike suntin dat happened tae 'da freend o a freend', when a story is aald an' aertkent enoff, der's no need ta pick hols in it, or look for corroboration.
Hit may be da Ollaberry poltergeist is just a story dat hurled, gadderin' embroidery as he guid.

I wis never awar o da 'cookin ghost' when I wrowt at Radio Shetland, but I wid agree wi comments abuin dat Brentham Hoose wis a spooky hol aftir dark. Not a place you wantit ta be on your own.
Mind you, nor wis upstair i'da Excelsior next door. Proximity tae da Fort, tink you, or redder mair aertly spirits?

Are there any ghost stories from the Garrison Theatre?
I heard there was a soldier who used to appear around some cupboard at the foot of the stairs (at the performers entrance). No one connected to the theatre could say they had actually seen anything though, the tale had just been passed on.

The is "supposedly" a ghost that abodes in the upper front of house lighting area, but no stories of a soldier or any such thing.

I've worked in there for years now, and that is the only ghost story I'm aware of.

Also, ever since SYT performed "The Scottish Play" at Scalloway castle in '04, I've heard 2 or 3 people say that some people have claimed to have seen a dead medieval warrior covered in blood roamed the outside. *coughs* bullsh*t *coughs*

Probably based on eye-witness accounts of John Durst as Banquo lurching off across the yard to wash his 'gorey locks' after the cauldron scene.

Mind you, there were a couple of folk though they saw 'something' during the run, including one woman who saw someone standing on the walls where no one could physically be standing. Hurrah for suggestion and mass hysteria.
