I was visiting my girlfriend at Shurton Brae in Gulberwick one night and walking up the road to my car in a good mood and totally without a care in the world. It was dark but i saw a figure ahead of me standing. I then felt somthing I have never felt before a feeling of utter despaire and dread and the temprature seemed to dip. It came from nothing and was utterely overwhelming. I called out and the figure seemed to waiver. I ran to my car and got the hell out of there. What ever the figure was it was there and wasent human. Next time i was there through the day i looked to make sure there wasent a pole or somthing there, the place was empty so it was somthing. The feeling was the most unnatural thing i have ever felt it was like somthing was infulenceing the surrounding around it.

Speaking about the old side pf the JC Hostel, has anyone been in the tower bit accessible through the top floor (we weren't allowed up but it was too tempting to resist!)......?? Creepy place. Apparently the hostel was used as a hospital during one of the Wars and the old study room in the basement was the morgue.......

I went up once and that was enough..... I remember there being a lot of bed pans and dusty old medical looking stuff. Eughh ... gies me the shudders just thinking about it.
Noises that distinctly sounded like a girl crying were often heard coming from one of the rooms along the corrider leading to the manager's hoose.

The above link is too a book about ghosts......Shetland ghosts even. Was on sale earlier but failed to sell and has been re-listed.

BTW has anyone bothered to look at our local internet auction site. Better now than it has been but still kind of useless compared to e-bay.

Remember that car that went on fire in Safeway's carpark a few years back? There is a book called Evil Scotland by Ron Halliday that claims the car was possesed by an evil spirit. Probably the biggest load of crap i have ever read

the safeway supermarket is built on top of what used to be the old marts, it was a bra creepy place day or night , i was told that over the years there have several people that have seen faint image of an old man walk around the back of the building and disappear .

What was on that site before the marts though? The part of the buildings in the immediate vicinity of the sale ring at least, appeared to have been converted from some earlier building(s). From the look of it it seemed to be of the same sort of materials etc as most WWII military buildings in Shetland. Was there a military camp of some sort there, or were the smililarites in that part of the buildings to WWII military buildings simply a coincidence?

scariest story im heard took place at the old school house in olaberry,i heard it on shetland radio wan night un nearly shet me breeks,i canno mind da right oots un inns but it wis a real bad ass poltergoost,
apparently many years ago the people in the house heard the screams of their bairn who was sleeping in another room, when they came to check on the child they found three bleeding scratches down the childs face and that was just the start of the trouble,all hell broke loose after that,
ive heard it said that when the child grew up you could still see the scars on her face.i also remember them speakin about the other children in the house being wrenched from the arms of the parents by a supernatural force.oooof!

Heard that story too but no sure whether its true or not. apparently it took place in the 1960s but no one likes to talk about it. Can anybody cast more light on this tale? When did it appear on Radio Shetland?

This thread seems to have gone a fair distance without anyone mentioning Busta House. I don't think I have ever spoken to anyone who has actually seen the ghost in that house, but most people seem to know someone who has.

Not Shetland related, but has anyone been on the Mary Kings Close or Vaults tour in Edinburgh? I've heard some fantastic stories about the Vaults, most seeming to involve the ghost of "Bloody" MacKenzie. Apparently in one of the Vaults the tour guide asks all females to stay on one particular side of a room because a number of women had been attacked by "something" whilst on the opposite side of the room. Another tour occasionally asks for visitors to switch off torches to create atmosphere or something, at one of these tours a young girl was standing on the opposite side of the room about 20 feet away from everyone else and when asked she said she had felt someone take her hand and lead her over to that corner.

The tours are something I have always wanted to do, not been in Edinburgh for years though.

Another couple of random ghost story memories.

The Catfirth car: people often claim to see a car coming the other way but it never appears ----trick of the light?

The Oilskin man at the phone box at the north Ollaberry junction, enroute to Collafirth.

I've heard tell a couple of times of this mysterious figure who is seen in or around the phone box, but disappears rather than ever being seen walking to/from the box. Very weird.

Would the wind house every one is alluding to be the house in Mid yell. I have alwas know it as the hoose 'o' windows, me granfaither , used tae tell wis stories ( he wis frae Mid yell) 'n he telt wis dat sumaen wis kilt and burried under da flag stanes at da back 'o da hoose. dat da dead eens haunted da hoose ower newrdy. stories in da late fifties early sixty's

Hello all,

Fantastic thread, really interestin' tae hear stories lik dis fae all ower Shetland. Is der any more comin' on da strage CCTV footage fae Gair & Smith's?

I've niver heard o da incident in da auld school hoose in Ollaberry - Anybody keen any more dan whit's been said already? I'm PM'd the kid lookin' fur a copy o da tape. I canna believe Radio Shetland wid cover something lik yun.

Just tae gie my two cents - I spent two years in da JC Hostel an' canna say dat I saw or felt anything ootstandingly weird dere.. Da Oui-Ja board craze dan cam an' went every noo an' ageen wus a bit freaky at times.

I've done a few o da Ghost Tours in Edinburgh though (I wrote some features on dem fur Uni) an' dey were a bit unsettlin' at times. Durin' wan o dem an' auld American wife nixt tae me startin' skirrlin' dat she could see a peerie lass standin' nixt tae da tour guide. Crapped mesell.
