According to BBC Radio Shetland the harbour trust and the SIC have hired consultants to advise them over the proposed Bressay Bridge. I have a better idea......lock them all in St. Clements Hall and not let them out until they have come to a sensible compromise.

Ah, consultancy. Endless juicy contracts with no obligation to deliver - the way forward!

Indeed - consultants - the folk who borrow your watch so they can tell you the time!

yes da cooncil in its infinite wisdom have a strong penchant for dis consultants, perhaps dee should hire a few that they could keep in wooden chests wearing full body vulcanised rubber suits with a simple hole for each major orifice to communicate through.

then when a tough decision has to be made morgan goodlad can shout

"BRING OUT THE CONSULTANT"

SANDY CLUNESS:-"THE CONSULTANTS SLEEPING"

MORGAN GOODLAD:-" WELL I GUESS YOU SHOULD BETTER GO WAKE HIM THEN?"

A point often missed ^ is that it is not the consultants who decide to employ themselves, nor decide the content of their reports, nor re-write their reports to promote an idea of their own accord.

If i might use an analogy for a moment; If you hire a painter to come to your home, tell him what paint and paper you want, tell him to repaint a couple of rooms a couple of times to your requirements, when visitors come around and tell you your house looks like a dogs dinner, It's all too easy to say,"Yes, it's the painters, it's all their fault"

Deffered responsibility is a powerful method to get what you want.

Research, planning, projections, history and investigative proposals.

And to take the flak instead of those who commision them. Which isn't entirely fair a lot of the time. As i've already alluded to, if the "commissioner" doesn't think a report paints a full enough picture to convince the public/shareholders/directors, or whoever is approriate, he will then ask for the report to be rewritten to take in/ leave out more info to further the cause that led to the commission in the first place.

It was a shock to me also to find out that all consultants are not indeed, numpties, and some of them do an extremely valid and honourable job. It is sometimes more the case that those employing them are numpties and scurrilous with it, deferring all blame to those who they had instructed to report to a firmly outlined formula with pre-determined resolution.

Very well put Njugle.

I can't help but think that ABA & co will get some of the blame when the proposed CMV doesn't in fact hit the £500k per annum food & drink sales target.

The CMV will do well to make a fifth of what they propose.

Of course we, the public, will also get the blame for not supporting this wonderful new venue.
