Our CEO!

Yeah, him. Old whatsisname.

Mark Boden, apparently....I had to Google to find out.

£97,000.00 is what this guy has cost us Oct '12 - Oct '13. Anybody seem him? Anybody spoken with him? Does this guy actually exist, and if he does, does he speak? Are we talking a "I walk quietly but carry a big stick" kinda guy, or just a "quiet" guy?

In over a year he's managed to get his mugshot in the paper a grand total of three times I've noticed, and one of those was in relation to his own appointment..... As for mentions in the local media in the last year, um, I'm not really recalling much of anything....

Now, its quite possible he's feverishly slaving over a overheated puter to all hours, but can we take that on faith.... Especially as our "political leader" believed at the time of the CEO's appointment that "he is an effective communicator" - Well, maybe he is, with somebody somewhere, but its certainly not with the electorate.

^ Behind the scenes folk are fine and well, if they are indeed working, and doing a decent job. Its not that long ago since the head of a local public body who *seemed* to be working away quietly, suddenly "left", leaving quite a chaotic scene behind him.

By definition it follows a great deal has to be taken on trust, which isn't maybe the smartest given the importance of the position, and some of the debacles that have come out in the wash with some of his predecessors. We can do without publicity seekers who live their entire lives and make all their mistakes on the front page of the Times, and sometimes in rags further afield, but someone who is virtually never seen of heard is the polar opposite, and arguably equally as bad in their own way.

A moderation, where the main man is seen and heard doing the job from time to time, is to my mind what should be expected.

but the point of his job is not to be in front of the media that's what the trained monkeys sorry council leaders are for. his role is to manage if he does that quietly but effectively i am happy.

Well, yes and no. Part of his job is to engage the media when appropriate, council leaders can only discuss with the media what occured at council meetings and the info supplied to them at such meetings by whichever council departments had relevant information to submit. The CE is the guy the who is in the position at all times to have the full overview of the entire council organisation, and address issues from the point of view of the entire council machine. Over the last year most of the heads of the various departments have been reported in local media on account of what they'd said at this or that council meeting, or been contacted by the media for a statement on an issue, and thats fine where whatever it is is restricted to their department only. The CE assumes the same role for the overall council machine, surely there's been something in the last year affecting the whole council machine that was worthy of some sort of public contribution from him, or at least from his office. Even if there hasn't, there have been department specific issues during that time of a magnitude that you'd have expected the CE to be out there backing up and providing support to the department head involved.

This is, loosely speaking, the role every previous CE the SIC has ever had. This one is either very different, or the local media have collectively decided to consider him persona non grata, which I very much doubt. If this is his preferred method of operation, then that's his perogative, but the down side of staying virtually completely off the public's radar is to have folk start wondering just what, if anything, they're getting in return for the just shy of £2k the man is drawing down every week.

  • 1 month later...

Seems he's more interested in getting his mug and name in the media as a toy soldier than as a civilian supreme Chief of Staff.....Hmmmm.

How can we know this man is slaving away behind the scenes in his day job making sure local democracy slips along seamlessly, this doing it all incognito doesn't do anything to inspire confidence.

He's been here 'over 5 years'.......apparently. I hadn't noticed as I was still waiting for him to start his first full days work.... So far he's cost us a minimum of £1/2 Million+ of our money.... Does anybody feel we've gotten 'best value'? I wouldn't be happy we'd gotten 'best value' if he'd only cost us 1% of what he has.

Anyhooo, he's going.....and that's good. Onwards and forwards....Shall we go headhunting Davie Clark again. He might have been a bit of loose cannon and drifted worrying close to despotic tendencies, but he got sh*t done.....

I don’t see Wiltshire Council regretting getting shot of Mr Boden and the rest of the dead weight in their management structure, it’s a shame we don’t have a strong council leader with a pair of balls as in Wiltshire with Mr Bodens former boss Councillor Baroness Scott, she would have made short work clearing the large proportion of the dead beats from our SIC top heavy management team with her motivation and ability to wield the axe, I think over the years our councillors have become steadily weaker to the point they have completely lost all sense of what their actually supposed to be doing and have been bullied and suckered into becoming nothing more than puppets controlled by an arrogant out of control incompetent SIC management team, time for somebody to stand-up and call time on this nonsense and get the house in order before central government steps in to take control!
For successful management you need strong high caliber people with the correct skill set and experience, it’s the quality of your employees not the quantity of them that counts when it comes to effective management, again one of the biggest problems with our current management team in Shetland where the evident shortfalls in skill and experience are constantly being highlighted.
Maybe Baroness Jane Scott would be interested in becoming a consultant and directing and motivating our lost councillors and get them back on track and in control!

^Nice thought, Maybe get them with their own 'anti-bullying' (aka. I've had my feelings hurt and I'm going to cry and cry unless you cocoon me is fluffy comfy cotton wool) policy. Unless of course management are trying to play a double bluff.

SIBC Headline today:

The Shetland Community Safety and Resilience Board and the Shetland Planning Partnership have issued a message that there should be a zero tolerance approach to any form of bullying behaviour that harms children, young people and adults.

A CEO is only as powerful as he is allowed to be.

If he is surrounded by people who only wish to suck up to him, for their own gain he doesn't need to work hard. If however he has people who will challenge him, for the general good of the populace,, then democracy starts to work. Our CEOs don't really need to keep their heads down, as no-one ever finds enough energy or courage to challenge or bombard them.

He always greeted me when he saw me even when I didn't know who he was.

I found out who he was on the 3rd November 2017.

Now that is a pretty good heads down.

Congratulations to the council.

Regards,

Rex
