To this Joannie I would say remember the source. Not being a fisherman and being too young to remember what was going on at the time I cannot dispel the article entirely.

When I worked at the SIC one of my jobs was administering loans to Shetland fishing boats. Through the 1980's and 1990's the landings got better and the boats got bigger. The high point was when the last incarnations of the Sunbeam and Andromeda arrived. They had to get rid of them in the early 2000's. Many other boats were decommissioned in the same period.

The Shetland fishing has had a comeback in recent years with new boats entering the fleet, partly due to recovering fish stocks.

The sunbeam and Andromeda were skiffs compared to the big EU boats fishing here at that time, paid for by grants from the EU, Spain got £1.16billion in fisheries grants last year the UK industry got £0.2 billion last year yet we are the ones with the fish stocks.

with  the westminster mob running around like headless chickens at the moment we have an ideal oppurtunity  to put the pressure on and offer them a deal .on the oil fields .....half the revenue income to be paid to Shetland tax free and for the life of the said fields in return we get get self governance with all sea areas as agreed and all other controls as in a free nation

Perhaps not Joannie but the oil price has almost doubled since its low of $27ish (??) a barrel and there are new fields coming on stream (clair ridge and SGP being two in shetland) so the North Sea is far from done yet.

Bravetwin I am not sure what relevance Nigel Farages failings have to this discussion???

Oh, dear! Perspective.

UKIP's declared policy was/is to exit the EU, why would they waste time on tinkering around the edges of the unreformable? it would have contributed nothing to their stated goal, rather it would have worked against it by weakening the strength of their argument.
