^ a leader of some sort is needed just not four like weve had lately - between two stools the ass falls down and all that

Don't quite understand this..  By "four" do you mean other councillors who are willing to express an opinion/the opinions of their constituents even if it does go against the opinions of our "leaders"?

FWIW.

The big "shock" was Gary Robinson not getting re-elected  but, is it possible that he was to far "out of touch" with his voters and, that's what cost him..

It's all well and good to make big(?) (or appear to support them) decisions but, if your electorate think differently, go figure..

Should have taken a few tips from his predecessor..  That guy was an expert in not taking the blame for anything....

When there is just one political party with one seat in the SIC surely either that member should be the political leader or there is no real need for a political leader let alone a deputy.

They all deal with politics.  They are all politicians.  To suggest that the councillor allegedly representing my interests in South Mainland should be the political leader is highly distasteful, given that not a single vote was cast in his favour.  I'll go further - he should resign and I've told him so to his face.  His reply was that due process had been followed and where should it end, and also that he had spent money on leaflets, etc.?  He hoped that people would judge him on his actions.

I do judge him on his actions.  Due process has been followed but it doesn't make it morally right.  I'd rather see a change in the law so that others get the chance to stand in circumstances whereby there is a no contest situation.  Alternatively, for those within the affected ward to be given the opportunity to do a yes/no to those who have 'won' the no contest.   (Edit:  I'd rather it be no representative than having one forced upon me) Simply put, he doesn't have the mandate of the people living in the ward.  The other two councillors for South Mainland have at least stood previously, the SNP candidate hasn't.

Are you seriously suggesting that independents are not political?

No not really saying Robbie McGregor should be the political leader of the council but questioning why they need one.  After all the elected councillors probably represent just about all political parties.

As for the "no contest" result that is something that will happen in multi seat council elections and is maybe an unintentional side effect of the PR system.  Of course the same could happen with single seat Parliamentary constituencies and possibly has happened in the past where, by convention, at least the main parties do not stand against The Speaker.

As for a mandate I suppose supporters of the scheme might well say that since no one stood against him in Shetland South (not even a paper Tory) his mandate exists by default.

it needs a leader of some sort its been big enough of a shambles with one lately several god knows what it would be like without

the political moniker was only introduced for descriptive purposes to distinguish the council leader from the council convenor

the former is in charge of council business the latter of civic and ceremonial business

regardless of what their title theres been too many leaders lately

one chief where the buck for everything stops then we know where we are and who to blame

Yes I would say to many chiefs and not enough indians.

What does our chief executive Boden get paid so handsomely to do?

Mark Boden seems to have risen without trace.

Mr Boden has taken the council for around half a million so far, done absolutely fu*k-all, had his auld colleagues contracted in as consultants some of which we are still awaiting feedback and reports, I have already expressed my disappointment with this and his general lack of input or enthusiasm to the Ex-Political Leader & Convenor.

One of our local Councillors has yet to meet Mr Boden despite already serving a 5 year term, again showing his inactive approach to the job if he can’t even take the time to meet the councillors elected by the people of Shetland.

It wouldn’t surprise me to see him being the next SIC employee to make it into the Town Hall Rich List with a golden handshake from the SIC.

wtf is up with people

ive just seen an snp notable on facebook also getting totally confused as to how someone can be the political leader of a council when theyre not a member of a political party

no wonder the country is in such a damn mess if political party members are labouring under the illusion theyre the only ones who can be real politicians

political is the nature of the business a person is involved in not being signed up to one club or another

sheesh....rant over
