Have your say on Knab plans

So there we have it a public exhibition and meeting next week to let us know the plans for the Old AHS and Hostel site.

Possibly I'm being my usual suspicious self but fear this will be a ploy to make us feel that we have some involvement should we make the time to attend any of those meetings, when in reality the powers that be have probably decided by now what is really going to happen anyway.

Still I might go along anyway, curiosity killed the cat and satisfaction apparently brought it back :ponders:

Just a passing thought, but would it not be better to spend £320,000 on one of the old hostels, converting it into flats to accommodate  the Syrian refugees rather than buy two houses.

They could stay there until they are able to speak "english" and are able to hold a job and demonstrate there ability to blend into the community ,later qualifying/and joining the list for better housing.

This would make sense as the building could be used over and over again for folk with similar problems.

as long as a select club runs the  S I C  (Very apt name ) and cannot make money for their select secret society they will either ignore the obvious or prevericate on the outcome of any solution ...common sense cost them money and the public must pay their price

Every 5 years I like many others go to the polling stations in the hope of "rooting out" this problem but they are like weeds and keep finding there way back.

^ A lot of the problem these days seems to be that it isn't those we get the chance to vote for who make the decisions.

The elected SIC are now little more than a token gesture rubber stamping (or not) what someone else has decided upon based on edicts from Holyrood, and put in front of them, to give local governement a fake greasy veneer of legitimacy.

The choice they're given is to either accept or reject, gone are the days when the elected council brought to the table the agenda of what needed attention, then debated how they were going to proceed and instructed officials to prepare reports on the options they considered worth exploring to find the best solution. Now officials bring to the table what they believe needs attention, along with their choice of proposed solution fed to them from Holyrood, leaving the elected council two choices, either go along with what the officials want "as is", or do nothing.

Debate in public is minimal, and if any debate takes place at all it must do so in these damn 'secret' seminars etc they believe in so strongly.

Regardless of who is voted n, there will be no sense until elected members regain control of the ship by putting officials back in their place and reminding them who is in charge, making debating in public their default setting rather than the other way around, and curtailing as far as is possible the root of most evil, so called 'delgated authority' to officials - a little power is dangerous, and with this lot its gone right to their heads worse than neat whisky on an empty gut.

The officials will of course resist such a move with everything they can lay their hands on, as they have such a cushy number going on right now being able to do what they like with whatever they like whenever they like, but its got to happen elsewise we're just going to keep on keeping on sailing on this modern day Titanic, or is it the Vital Spark......Either way, same difference in the end.

They don’t all make it back we managed to Oust our arrogant ‘SIC Pup’ Oot Wast; he’d been walking in shoes half a dozen sizes too big far too long and didn’t listen to anyone out with the club! Don’t see his laughing buddies from the Select helping him now he’s no use to them! Should be a clear message to all Councillors listen to the public and do your job properly or your out!

^ Agreed, becoming an ex-Councillor via the ballot box is a fast track to permanent oblivion. Those who get too cosy and see it as a job for life would do well to remember that, nobody is ever to high to have the feet kicked right out under them.

.We maybe can't force those that get elected to take the bull by the horns and put their house in order, but we can at least make sure those who "get with the program" and become part of the problem get a well aimed boot up the jackass.

At least this time round there are a few aboard who are making encouraging noises about doing things differently, but whether they're enough to get past the passive majority who sit saying nowt for fear it will rock the boat, and manage to rattle the ruling elite, only time will tell.

In some ways the near silent passive majority are the biggest problem these days, as they are preventing from happening through apparent indifference what the SIC needs to happen - a massive boat rocking session until only a crew of essential staff remain, and all the freeloading passengers are flung over the side to sink or swim for themselves.

untill we get rid of the hanging angels we wil not have a free and independant vote in our Island affairs ...look at your history to see what happened to an Island

Had to laugh at reading former Councilor Gussie Angus comment on the old AHS site, wasn't so long ago he sat on his a*se in the Toon Hall and called me a NIMBY for not wanting  another of their Ad hoc development as him and his cronies had put forward and railroaded for developed in Gulberwick, well they do say what goes around comes around, so it's up your a*se Mr. A (Hole)  another lesson to be learnt for our officials and elected  you can’t expect one rule for one man and another rule for others, time to start eating some of that Turd you spoke while elected! LOL not so smug now are you NIMBY!
Was surprised they didn't mention anything about the council looking to relocate HQ to old AHS building?

Housing and mixture of civic uses proposed for disused Anderson High School site ?

well this seems to be plan from start housing idea from Sic  in this area, when in fact they have land in area stanny  hill for houses better keep such housing one location with good  Infustrutcure place and not spoil nice scenic area with housing. Next to cemetery.

I think this area better to be kept for social use for young and old    centre for old people were they can Go in day time like a day centre with nice gardens planted trees, main buildings can be used for accommodation for people of Shetland and uk to come stay few days on holiday, at low costs.

even people from islands would love come lerwick stay few days but accommodation is quiet high price these days   hotels  costly, I think SIC needs let people Shetland Decide what to do with this area as belongs to people and Sic Officials are appointed to represent people by their votes, and to hear people views,

This  project must be put to ballot vote  were by all people Shetland can vote what to do, this not hard or costly excise as 25000 plus people on islands and  papers can be sent each house hold  with number options given as to use property, old Anderson high school nice old building better to keep as way it was outside with Gardens were people can enjoy looking outwards to bressey, enjoy area, I understand housing required in Lerwick But last 20 years Sic have kicked their heels with planning permissions in area for developers  In  UK plenty companies  developers come put houses up for buyers in Shetland  if Sic give permissions ,as Shetland house prices are quiet good for builders on profit. They can design build if land available this SIC must think of.  Same applies to North Isle tunnels it’s for future generation to have so we must build today for our children. People must decide Its future Not stand still

A none goverment assocation needs be set up represent people views for Anderson High Former school

And other problems in shetland, I am shetland native person and when I here needs people food parcels  its sad weres our large Oil fund Gone, when small country schools close its sad Whats Happening here

Surely it would be prudent of the council to keep as many of the existing buildings as possible.

Some of the huts surely could be used for something of a business nature and the old further education building that has been used by the special needs department and the Eric Gray Resource Center could be saved from the bulldozers, and another use found for it..

Their are other facilities that surely could remain.

A lot of public money was spent on this site and to knock down perfectly good buildings is not right.

Typical council build it today and knock it down again in a few years time after all it is only public money, Kanterstead homes one good example.Oops! forgot some fall down themselves.

Glad I do not stay in that part of the town. The Knab area could be a building site for years to come   :ponders:

And again why do we need a firm "fae sooth tae plan da Knabs future.

Looks like there's going to be a lot of housing there. That's fine. Folk need houses but what I'm wondering about are the other developments which could be considered. There seems to be a significant lobby for a hockey pitch and what about the campsite which was bulldozed to make room for the new AHS? Furthermore, extra houses mean more people in Lerwick - total anathema to those of us who live in the rural areas, but won't this need another primary school? Finally, what happens if there's no cash forthcoming from anywhere to refurbish the remaining buildings? Will they be boarded up and left to deteriorate?

No point in mentioning it, when you can keep schtum and do it by stealth. Seems like at least one crew are already flit in.
