It's a good question though.  In the "uncertain" times ahead, any form of local communication is better than no communication at all.  After all, can we REALLY rely on something as technically complicated as the internet ?

you can share internet over Ham radio, some techniques are faster than dial up.

I think that you might have missed my point !!

Yes, Nullvoid did miss your point. Harvard base station. I have not tried it with an antenna as I do not have one as yet but it gives 4 watts out to a dummy load on activation of the press to talk key so I assume that it is working ok.

You can still LAN party on these and surely if you are preparing top do this long term surely you would want to explore all possibilities.

when News of the Article 13 draconian copyright directive came out plans had to be made so we can continue to get information(memes/sprootle) through to people who cant get onto particular parts of the internet.

lots of discussions about files over radio back then.

also dwindling pool of users with ametuer radio especially if its low power covering a small area, maybe send ebooks to each-other or something.

if its rarely used people will check it less often

I seem to remember that the Harvard base had a pretty good rep.  Anyway, if it is reading on a dummy load, then it is probably transmitting something!!

Hook up an antenna for Rx only to see if there is any "life" out there, but, be aware that a whole bunch on new frequencies have been allocated to UK CB in the last couple of years.    Guess most people will be using them these days.

Hello, Thank you for the info. I did not know about the new frequencies so I will check them out, I did intend to put a homemade antenna up to see if there was anything but on asking people locally I would not hold out much hope. Everybody uses mobile phones etc. but as you say it may be a good idea to have a backup. The mobile phone/internet has also influenced amateur radio.

Yes, well I wouldn't count on mobile phones being "on" either (in an emergency).

All these technologies require expert technicians to maintain them.  Hooking up a radio to a battery and hanging a wire up is pretty simple.

The newly allocated frequencies seem to be ole old "naughty forty" and (i believe) SSB is permitted as well, not just FM.
