Described by procurator fiscal Duncan Mackenzie as a 'feckless' operation that didn't require much detective work to uncover, the trio were intercepted at the NorthLink ferry terminal in Lerwick on 19 September last year.

And building a satellite tracking and communication centre on the island of Unst could be the lever to eventually providing high speed broadband as well a better ferry and/or fixed links to the North Isles. Speaking from Aberdeen Airport on her journey back to the isles from the Farnborough Airshow on Wednesday, Sandison was adamant that Shetland Islands Council (SIC) had not been asked to put any money towards the venture.

    Climbers clear Calder’s Geo of bruck

All photos: Climb ShetlandTWO TONNES of litter was collected from the bottom of Calder's Geo in Eshaness after a group of local climbers took to the ropes on Sunday to clear the beauty spot of bruck. Ten members of Climb Shetland dragged the rubbish up to the cliff top, attracting interest and occasional help from the numerous passing tourists. The haul was much less than the club's previous Calder's Geo redd up in 2012, which lifted seven tonnes of bruck. This year's collection included several gas cylinders, polystyrene blocks, an oil drum and a buoy that had crossed the Atlantic from Bucks Harbour, Maine.

However, the original vision of fully restoring the listed building with its unique woodland area and developing it into a fully-fledged visitor centre with a café, library/learning centre and office space is unlikely to be achievable in the current financial climate.
