Coronavirus: London’s Nightingale Hospital being ‘wound down’ after no new patients for a week
https://www.msn.com/en-gb/news/coronavirus/coronavirus-londons-nightingale-hospital-being-wound-down-after-no-new-patients-for-a-week/ar-BB13uivU?li=BBoPWjQ

The situation has been replicated across England: none of the other Nightingale hospitals in Birmingham, Manchester or Harrogate have patients.
Approximately 200 staff were gathered in the boulevard area of the ExCel conference centre in east London on Friday afternoon, where chief operating officer Natalie Forrest explained the challenges facing the hospital. She told staff discussions had started on the future of the hospital and that a final decision would come “sooner rather than later” within the next week.
Questions are being asked about whether it is sustainable to keep open the Nightingale hospital, which was originally designed to look after 500 patients. Many other hospitals in the capital have space as part of the emergency capacity created to cope with a Covid-19 surge that never fully materialised.

Oy Vey! Looks like the NHS is just too overburdened to ease the Lockdown

Wales, Italy and Spain all have an inflow of retirement age people and an outflow of working age people who move out for jobs and they are among the hardest hit.

^^Yes!!

Despite the unforgivable, shambolic delay and terrible management of the crisis, tragically leading us to having one of the highest death rates in the world, we finally have a good news story and a tiny glimmer of hope.

1)The gargantuan efforts of our NHS going well above and beyond the call of duty, are trying their best to treat people in the safer environment of fully functioning hospitals rather than field hospitals.

2)The lockdown is working.

Lets hope the government have learned their lesson and watch, listen to and act like some of the proper, grown up governments around the world and try and not make a mess of the next phase, (coming out of lockdown).

Cant have air conditioners on in normal hospitals due to virus circulation and i had been working 11hr and longer shifts in an unconditioned building further south during the last few heatwaves when it was like 30°C outside was busy needed to do lots of heavy lifting and had to go from room to room often, cant imagine how conditions are going to be with damp stuffy and uncomfortably warm hospitals maybe the field hospitals are better i don't know they are at least purpose built and if there was any point in building them at all they should be on standby as the lock-down gets eased.

This pertains to England, Wales and NI, possibly Scotland but Mainland Scotland and islands might both have different schedule

Welsh government quote from the Scottish Sun link above..."The Welsh Education Minister will announce when Welsh schools will reopen, not the UK Government."

Quite right too, Education is devolved, it's their responsibility to decide when it's safe to do so. Following Boris and his government has proven to be hazardous to health.

Personally I hope the Scottish government aren't as hasty, we can wait and see how the other countries (who are much further ahead than us in their suppression measures) get on first.

2)The lockdown is working.

Well, its doing 'something', there can be no real debate about that. 'Every action has an equal and opposite reaction' and all that........

Care to provide a definition for 'working' as used in the quote?

Yes, its helped slow the spread, but so what? What does that gain us, in medical terms, in the longer game?

^^"Lockdown is working" - It's slowed the spread to a level where the NHS hasn't collapsed, it's slowed it to a level where the field hospitals aren't needed, (presently).

Long term solution (Until a vaccine is widely available) - I'm no Epidemiologist but here's an open letter from a good few prominent Professors in Epidemiology and other related experts with their possible solution, published in the Lancet...

The theory may be okay, but.

1) There is no more a reliable test available in the present than there is a reliable vaccine.......

2) How do you ensure the testing of an entire population within a given geographical area. Make it compulsory? Human right lawyers will love that.

Undocumented persons? Who knows how many of them are here and in what concentration in certain localities. Ironically there's a high level or probability that the highest levels of undocumented persons are in some of the current hotspots eg. London, and equally ironically there's a high level of probability that  undocumented persons, should they contract the virus will be the most prolific spreaders.

Those folk got here 'illegally', remain here 'illegally' and sure as hell aren't going to just volunteerthere presence when asked to take a test. They are very unlikely to even show themselves anywhere where their identity is questioned even if they contract the virus and become as unwell that they need hospital treatment. Many of them are more than prepared to risk death to get here in the first place, so risking death to be able to stay here will come very naturally.

Finally, how do you secure this geographical area? Short of having a wall of Police/Military stand guard 24/7/365 within line of sight of each other along the boundary, and fully floodlit during the hours of darkness, its impossible.

Okay, even allowing for only a partial blanket testing rate and folk slipping in and out of the area unobserved it probably is a slightly better option to go forward with than repeated re-openings followed by another shutdown whenever the curve gets too steep from the new wave of infections, but its not a solution. *If* every person was recorded on a list along with their current place of residence, and every person did exactly as the Government told them, it might have a chance of getting someplace, but to achieve anything near to that we'd have to be a Communist of Fascist nation, and we're not quite that yet, even though I do wonder sometimes..... Human nature among the 'leaders' and the 'loners' of humanity is to rail against being ordered and dictated to, only the led comply.

As I've said before, the only solution is a vaccine, or herd immunity, whichever arrives first. The only question at the moment is do we take the scenic route or make a quick sprint for the latter, with a probable similar body count either way when we do get there. I'd prefer to get it over and done with ASAP, as I don't believe its realistic to expect an effective and reliable vaccine to become available in tie to make any appreiable difference, but appreciate I'm in the minority opinion.

Just had a walk past Tesco where there was a very long line of people waiting to get in but not one of them wearing a face covering despite the Scottish governments recommendation  to do so  . Why is there this huge reluctance to wear masks ? Is it because people are ammbaristed to wear one or just can't be bothered ? At the very least the staff should be wearing ones but they don't bother either as far as I can see .
