So where do they live and what do they live on while their asylum claim which in many cases takes years is being processed ? Muckle Oxters Posted October 5, 2020 Report Share Posted October 5, 2020 You become a citizen as soon as you claim asylum because the point of asylum is so that you cant be sent back, No really, at first you're legally an asylum seeker until your application for refugee status is processed. If you're successful den you can work, claim benefits, have an NI number etc but you're still no a citizen, and you could have refugee status revoked if da government decide you no longer fit da refugee criteria (if da country you fled fae isna a risk onymare fur example). Just cant see how anyone could live on £37 a week in this day an age thats only about a fiver a day . We put a roof over their heads whilst they are being "processed" and give them some "pocket money" to spend in the meantime.I don't understand where their sense of "entitlement" is coming from. A single person in this situation can get by on £37 pw if they have to. Large bag of tatties is under £4 at Testco. A tin of beans is about 35p. You can even get a steak there for less than £3. One a person passes through the first "safe" country in which they can claim asylum, they become "migrants".
