Proposed Co-op Stores in Scalloway & Sandwick ?

Would make more sense to put it in a more central location,

In or Between Lerwick and Scalloway would be good for foot traffic but they would want business from those who live on the smaller islands too so being near the ferry’s for smaller islands is something they would want.

generally aldi and lidl tend to feed of supermarkets there strategy is to be as close as possible hence the one in orkney that is next door to tesco and the coop

Brae Coop would appear to be doing OK, so see no reason why they would not want to branch out further. Just a rumour  perhaps.

 

Problem I have with Tesco is the way they "freeze" the fruit and veg.as it is transported to Lerwick.  You know this is happening when it is sweating on the shelves as it comes out of the containers.

 

Fruit and Veg should be chilled but not frozen,consequentially as a result they do not keep .

That may be, but then there's quality and value for money considerations. Not necessarily saying the Coop stock superior quality products, just that they'd find it difficult to stock ones that were poorer quality, so maybe their higher prices aren't entirely unjustified on VFM grounds.

I wouldn't consider building on the the land between Frank Charleson's and Blydoit as it very poorly drained. It used to flood regularly before the road was raised.

A strategically located Aldi or Lidl would not be in Sandwick or even Lerwick but instead En route to Lerwick especially within a short travelling distance to as many ferries as possible.

Considering the fact that they are planning to launch satellites from islands above there will be much more interest in the north mainland and businesses to serve those who would travel or settle there a much more central location would be ideal for a supermarket.

A Lidl or Aldi that looked like a Service station in a strategic location where thus far only those who are passing through tread could be ideal.

 

A Service station would be where you stay in your car if the hotels cant put you up for the night because of “covid” and perhaps be able to offer toilets as many public toilets are closed because of “covid”

 

Lerwick to Sandwick is about 32 min by bus and 18 min drive according to Google maps and seeing that its not particularly difficult or time consuming to get to Lerwick from anywhere south of Lerwick and not there is not that much passing traffic(not going to Lerwick), As nice as the area is that extra time is bad for business due to the detour.

That detour is extra time added to anyone arriving anywhere north or Lerwick and ideally you would want somebody to be able to arrive on the second ferry of the day and leave on one that isn’t the last with enough time to get a good load of shopping and that detour would discourage somebody worried about missing the last ferry of the day

Needs to be in a place where you can get to and from by bus as “need to drive” is an argument used to slate something as anti-environmental.

If Aldi or Lidl went for the Service station design they might create a hub in the middle of Shetland which is good for getting the customers in, Pick a spot a few miles west away from Lerwick where the Number 6 passes just before going into Lerwick and you have already found a better location than Sandwick that can get you almost every customer that would have gone to Sandwick, And then more from the north.

Being next to Sandwick baking company or Co-Op and Tesco means you are sharing more of your customers, why not instead aim for those who have to travel more to get to the shops(or the right kind of shop) raher than build next to established ones?

Maybe they'd just go to Aldi or Lidl and not bother going the extra mile to Tesco since they got all they needed

Only question is Where would the ideal location be for a Lidl or Aldi?

My ideal location would be at Tingwall near the Westside junction.

I doubt the ideal location exists, there is no one place where you can get at both folk coming from the south end and those coming from the westside and north before they either end up at the Coop or Tesco, and it would take a great deal of very hard work to get many toonies to travel up either the Black Hill or Soond Brae to anywhere.

 

Somewhere between the Hollanders Knowe and the Brig o' Fitch through the Black Gaet *might* have been worth a punt, but for the geography and current and proposed industrial development. Where isn't a mire is steep, and if there's gonna be ice on a road, it'll be on sections there as soon as any. Plus, who wants to go shopping in a 'windmill alley'.

 

The toon isn't much of a place to shop, but all things considered its probably the ill-best compromise location we can expect to have.

 

Had the SIC been on the ball and been forward thinking back in the late 70's when businesses were leaving the street in droves and Lochside was being redeveloped, instead of allowing themselves to be led around by the snout by the Street Mafia of the day, and earmarked/encouraged/assisted in making the whole west side of Lochside a new modern shopping street, with a section set aside where supermarkets and national chains were put, so that they could fight it out among themselves as to who got the bargain basement trade, shopping might have been a whole different experience now.

 

But they didn't, and we have the hotchpotch we have, spread around the whole town, that's not likely to get much better, as there's damn all you can do with it unless just leave it to the whims of the public and individual businesses.
