Njugle
I can echo both your descriptions, and concur that our BT connection has been acting strangely for a couple of days. Notably, whilst uploading some photo's the other day i couldn't get any sense out of my browser at all, and that's never happened before. I thought the router was playing up, but glad to hear that it's not just us.

I phoned them up today and endured patrionising drivel about 'having my ADSL plugged in' and eventually she apparently cleared some 'fault' on my line. It's working better but still, some of it is a lil strange.
Wifey
Nope, mine's still useless. Everything is taking ages - it's like the old days of dial-up. I note that Lerwick hasn't appeared on the list of exchanges with problems on the BT Broadband site. It makes me wonder if they are doing anything at all. Mines is a lil better but they people on the end of the phone are idiots. Apparently my sites weren't appearing in my browser because of my firewall software - what a load of nonsense. I tried telling her that I had firewall protection on my router. That seemed to stump her. It is working a lil better but I severely doubt they're doing anything about this. I would phone up again today and moan at them. I already did, so maybe if someone else does, then they might pull the finger out. BTs service to Shetland is nothing short of awful. I was wondering, what DNS servers do you have set into your router? Mines are: 194.74.65.68194.72.0.114 Thought that might've been a problem, but I doubt it. Fjool
This might not solve your problem, but it's worth a try. If you're using windows: Start->Run-> Type CMD and hit enter In the window which appears type ipconfig /flushdns For more information you can read about 'ipconfig' here: http://www.pcstats.com/articleview.cfm?articleid=1723&page=
Wifey
Thanks Fjool but I'm on a Mac.
Fjool
Wifey, This page (http://www.tech-faq.com/flush-dns.shtml) might suit you better then. In Mac OSX, you can use the command lookupd -flushcache to flush the DNS resolver cache. bash-2.05a$ lookupd -flushcache I have no Mac to try this on so I'm not certain of this at all. Use at your own risk! Seems that it might not be a cache issue if it has been going on for a while though; I'd expect the cache to be flushed automatically once in a while anyway. Mario
Well I'm almost a week gone and still have rubbish Internet access to our beloved BT. I can safely say I've narrowed it down to the DNS Servers I'm using/they provided me. I will be getting onto them today to verify which DNS servers they're actually using. Twerto
One thing i heard ( not sure if your using wireless or not ) but if you use wireless.. you can find yourself needing to change the channel you use.. I belive the default is channel 6. and if everyoen just connects from the default.. it can cuase lots of interference with your connection. Marvin
Good to hear its not just me... My broadband has been crap for the last few days.... It keeps dropping every few minutes in the early evening. It gets better as the night progresses. I contacted BT and all they said was that I was to empty my temporary internet files........what a load of nonsense. When it is working the speed has improved (up to 3MB)...I would imagine what has happened is that they have improved the speed to to many users in the area so the system cant cope... Roll on next year and the coming of the Faroese cable....hopefully that will improve the reliability. It wont however aleviate the problem if its the local exchanges that cant cope..... Fifi
I know it's no consolation to those having problems with broadband with BT, but... when your contract runs out, you might want to try a proper provider.

I'm not using wireless, I don't trust it. 8O Indeed. I find BT so damn patronising. They treat you like a moron. I swore at their tech support after I told them I worked in IT, they still asked me if I had my ADSL line plugged into my modem. Their basic solution was to reboot.. and wait. Magic. Once my contract is up, I'm finishing with them, they're nothing short of a joke. They also passed off that so many people having problems, with the same thing, at the same time was mere coincidence and that 'sometimes even sites like BBC go down', or that is 'might not exist'. Wifey
Mario, I've just checked my DNS servers and they are the same as yours. It was running really well a little while ago but I seems to back to a go-slow again now. I'll probably ring BT again this evening.

I've tried changing my DNS to openDNS. http://www.opendns.com/start/mac.php Have a swifty at it. I tried it and now my internet seems to work perfectly, better than it ever did with that scum BT. I've not really read into it much, but it sounds better than what we're getting done to us at the moment.
Wifey
Mario, are you using a BT Home Hub? I can't work out how to change the DNS settings on it. A man from BT phoned earlier. He said the line fault had been fixed. I don't really see a difference. He left a phone number to ring if the problem wasn't solved. I'm just so fed up with all this.
