I think there is an injustice here.......having sat through the appeal Chris Hodge now has to wait 6 to 8 weeks for the decision. That will seem a very long wait for Chris and also for Caroline Miller as the value of the building probably rests on the outcome of the public enquiry.

Makes me wonder what is happening during that time. I accept that planning law is not always straight forward but it seems to me that even 6 weeks is way too long to weigh up all the evidence and reach a decision. And indeed the decision might already have been made. So why the delay?.

What I like best about The Hodge is that he makes his staff have manners. They can' just grunt and point, they actually have to smile and be articulate. I have been told this is a basic requirement for working in his premises and good for him. At last!

Also new verb in English language - "to chodge" or "to go chodging" - ie spend more than 10 minutes walking around Chris Hodge's empororium looking for stuff.

Wonderful place. He has my full admiration and respect for getting off his butt and achieveing his dream.

Which staff were those because all I have seen is women with more piercings than a teabag.... who dont really say much and go "uhhh" and "ta" or "Cheers"....

I was in Hodges this morning, and I heard on the radio that he is having a closing doon sale! so I guess.... its nae mair chris hodges! 8O Hello Tesco's! 8O 8O

I, for one, will be very sad. I shall boycott the shops that created the fuss. Sod the Street, I will shop on the internet. There was room enough for all of 'em. They didn't have to go throwing their teddies out of the cot.

As for Tesco's, hell will freeze over before I go in there!

A sad bad day if Hodge's closes.

I bet it will all be cleanly shoved under the carpet, just like the Nick Rieter debacle!

Very, very interesting reading!!!!

"Despite my extensive enquiries I have been unable to form a clear view regarding the precise complaint which led to the termination of Mr Reiter’s employment. I therefore find it difficult to understand how Council members could properly reach a decision as to whether the case against Mr Reiter was well founded." - from the report!

The strangest thing with the council's attitude to Chris Hodge is that for all the time he was turning up with his goods to hold "sales" in St. Clements Hall he was trading in a building owned by the SIC who could easily have terminated the lease on the hall held by the people who sub let to Chris and others. They seemed uninterested in what these "sales" were doing to trade in the town centre yet when Chris does the honourable thing and sets up a permanent shop here they seem to want him stopped. All most odd.

I feel the SIC planners are getting a bit of a rough deal here.

I suspect that they were quite happy to let Chris trade from both St. Clements and the old Judane warehouse. Hence the initial advice telling him it was o.k.

However, it was the Town Centre Assoc. led by Laurence Smith who started to run scared, and pressed the Planners into a position where they had no other option but to adhere to the policy and insist he submit a Planning Application for change of use. If they hadn't done that they would probably have found themselves in serious difficulties.

I also reckon once the application went to SIC Committee, the planners were praying it went through. Unfortunately for them it lost 4 votes to 3.

So if any one is to blame for pushing Chris out of Shetland, blame The Town Centre Assoc. or SIC Councillors, not SIC planners.

I absolutely agree with you Moorit.

In my mind's eye, I see a team of Town Centre Associates armed with pitchforks striding purposefully up to Messrs Hodge to "run him out of town", sort of like at the beginning of Shrek.

I would be very interested to know, apart from Laurence Smith, who the other members were from the TCA that objected, so that I can consider my stand on boycotting their shops.

I hate this type of bullyboy tactics and find it very shabby. It looks so bad when you read it in the press and it is bad publicity for Shetland.
