francoscot
I believe that families who do not own a their own transport should qualify for a community council rate reduction.
ArabiaTerra
I second that!
Fjool
I believe that families who do not own a their own transport should qualify for a community council rate reduction. On what grounds? I agree that not owning a car should be encouraged, but I don't think the council tax would be the correct mechanism.
Heimdal
They are already saving on car tax, vat, road licence, fuel duty, insurance, maintenance, so I think they should just pay their council tax
Njugle
^Yup!^ If anything they should perhaps pay more as they are contributing less and benefitting from subsidised public transport.
lec
Agree with Nugle - they're using a council service so should pay for it. A lot of people who might not want to own / run a car need to have one precisely because the public transport system is not developed enough to cater for their needs. If anyone deserves a reduction in council tax it's them! But I do think that people who do not use council services as much (eg people who mostly recycle so use refuse collection less) should get some form of reduction from that part of the tax. Some sort of "pay as you use" type thing?
lec
and will learn to spell Njugle in future - sorry!
NewMagnie
I believe that families who do not own a their own transport should qualify for a community council rate reduction. When did community councils get the power to raise rates? Must've been a very well hidden tax...
Colin
^Yup!^ If anything they should perhaps pay more as they are contributing less and benefitting from subsidised public transport. Does this mean that residents of Whalsay, Bressay, Yell, Unst etc. should pay more because of the millions spent on ferries?
