Styles
I didnt care at all or understand how our local goverment worked, then when i had to go to meetings I was shocked at the incompetence, arrogence, pig headness and pure lack of forward thinking or thinking at all. It honestly shocked me, its put me off democracy for life as I thought good idea but in practice, this is reality.I could shame multiple councillors for their shear ineptude.I honestly think democracy should be curbed and people standing should be made to do an intellegence test, as i know a few who honestly wouldent pass and what scares me is they have a say in how our money is spent! Carlos
While not getting into individudal failings..... Does the lack of a party system in local politics in Shetland mean councilors are too interested in what will get them re-elected (local-local issues) to the detriment of what is best for Shetland? Ghostrider
Democracy possesses at least one significant flaw IMHO, insofar as those who have adequate levels of arrogance and self importance to consider themselves worthy of representing and making decisions on behalf (for our own good ) of the rest of the great unwashed, have almost certainly displayed irrefutable evidence of their total absence of talent(s) to perform said tasks in any size, shape or manner. At council level we, IMHO, observe this theory being continously proven in it's most base form.
Fjool
It has been said many times, and in many ways, that the desire to weild power is diametrically opposite to the ability to use it honestly and effectively.

Ghostrider
Perhaps you would have to be stupid to stand I daresay sundry SIC "officials" and "advisors", from whom the most crackpot and wildly irresponsible initiatives appear to always originate, would, off the record of course, agree. lumpsucker
I like to draw comparisons with the mafia when looking at our local authority. They rule their employees using fear and bribery, they must have a cut of the action on all projects going on, if there is competition to any of their proposed schemes they will 'force' them out of business. Drew Ratter gets my vote as Fredo! Thats the only vote of mine he would ever get. Morgan Goodlad has to be Michael Corleane (the Godfather) Any other suggestions for the rest of the gang? I will have to watch out for reprisals now - oh no they might stop collecting my essy bags!

JAStewart
If you all feel that the councilors are so incompetent why don't you stand? Just wait 4 years and see if we're having this same conversation about you.
Sudden Stop
If you all feel that the councilors are so incompetent why don't you stand? I wis wondering how long it would be before someone said that!
Ghostrider
If you all feel that the councilors are so incompetent why don't you stand? Just wait 4 years and see if we're having this same conversation about you. Notwithstanding that my personal circumstances make it very difficult to consider doing so, that I don't feel I have any right to be taking decisions on behalf or other people, and I sincerely don't want the job of trying to drag something resembling sanity out the the chaos the current lot are leaving behind them. Who'd vote for me and my radical off the wall views.... Assuming for the meantime I had have been one of the guilty during this last term, I'd have been pushing for the Cinema & Music Venue to also incorporate a strip club, lap/pole dancing area and a Casino. That way the overall project might just have had some chance of being a break even venture. I'd also have been pushing to have everything east of the Hillhead from Mounthooly Street to the Fort bulldozed, it's nothing but a collection of pokey peerie hols, trenkies and underutilised prime real estate. Clear it, open it up, be it for a modern retail park type development with adequate access for shoppers and shopkeepers alike, and proper parking facilities. Or, for housing development and retail relocated to a fresh site development. The rubble could have been used as infill, entend the pier arm so that bigger cruise liners could come alongside, if the LPA were up for that. It's another underutilised asset, lyin' aff an' frapping back and fore in peerie boats discourages a lot of passengers from coming ashore and spending. Do I have your vote JAS? How much compensation are they going to receive for their little 'inconvenience'?
