thomsk
I HAVE BEEN FOLLOWING WITH INTEREST THE DEBATE IN THE SHETLAND TIMES THAT SEEMS TO BE SPIRALLING AS A RESULT OF JIM TAITS PERSONAL GRUDGES. I FOR ONE WOULD LIKE TO SHOW MY SUPPORT FOR ALL THE HARD WORK AND DEDICATION THAT THE COACHES OF ALL JUNIOR SPORTS GIVE TO THE YOUNGSTERS OF SHETLAND. MY OWN SON HAS PLAYED FITBA SINCE THE AGE OF SEVEN IN AN ORGANIZED CLUB. LAST YEAR HE PLAYED FOR SHETLAND AT THE FANTASTIC ABERDEEN INTERNATIONAL FOOTBALL FESTIVAL, AND HAS NOW STARED THIS YEARS TRAINING FOR THE UNDER 16s. NONE OF THIS WOULD HAVE BEEN ACHEIVED WITHOUT THE SUPPORT NETWORK OF ALL COACHES INVOLVED. AS A RESULT OF HIS TEAM SPIRIT I FEEL HE HAS GROWN INTO A MORE MATURE AND RESPONSIBLE INDIVIDUAL. WOULD MR TAIT PREFER A CHILD BROUGHT UP WITHOUT DICIPLINE , STANDARDS , AND THE RESPECT OF THE OLDER GENERATION. TO SAY THAT A CHILD SHOULD NOT BE COACHED IN SPORT UNTIL THE AGE OF 12 IS RIDICULOUS. SHOULD WE THEN KEEP OUR KIDS HOME FROM SCHOOL UNTIL THEN TOO IN CASE A TEACHER SHOUTS AT THEM? I THINK NOT.
nautim
In some sports to start at the age of twelve would be too late. I don't know anything about football but gymnastics in particular needs early coaching. The second point about coaches shouting at children - any good coach doesn't shout unless there is a reason. You might have to shout to be heard above the background noise or to be heard across a football/hockey/rugby pitch. A good coach wouldn't shout at a child to coach them - that's being a bully. Shetland has a huge number of coaches in a huge number of sports. Many of these people not only give up their time but also their own money to participate - it costs a lot to go on training courses, to attend competitions etc. A lot of the time they get very little thanks other than seeing that the children are enjoying learning something that the coach enjoys teaching. I don't know anything about football, but there seem to be huge numbers of small boys chasing footballs round the south end of Clickimin later in the year. If the coaching was no use or was traumatic surely they would vote with their feet?
