Titanic!

I really can't make up my mind which is worst on the eye, that, or Mareel. At least the Titanic building doesn't have much to live up to in name terms anyway, so that may be it's excuse.

It at least has been completed ahead of schedule....but then again, they had £100 Million to play with. :?

Also, many DJs and promoters aren't interested in booking venues that finish before other clubs in the surrounding area. As I'm sure other local promoters and DJs would confirm, it's pretty disappointing to watch punters leaving events early so they can join the queue to get into nearby premises that are open for another hour.

Wouldn't that be motivation to make their performance unmissable? Or are they happy enough to turn up and go through the motions?

Also doesn't say much positive about the clientele if the bevvy is the most important thing in their night out.

The bevvy sales is the much needed income Mareel will need to be profitable. Without a 2am license this project will struggle. The jobs advertised in the paper this week for Mareel could be done by some of the arts trusts employees saving £50000 .

I dont think the success of Mareel or should i say whether or not it will be profitable will hinge on a 1 hour licence extension ,

Even if it has to be subsidised i still think its a good thing for the people and future generations ,

You just have to look how our athletes have performed at the island games, would they have achieved so much without our top class leisure facilites ?

Why does something have to make money to be good. How shallow are folk nowadays.

I do not think the whole project pivots on selling drink. It will attract other incomes. It is foremost a learning center, next you will be wanting libraries to make a profit.

Now then, explain this.

Your figures may be wrong. Firstly, paying the staff, the cost of electricity, the cost of the drink, the cost of the cleaning. Now, the cleaning of the toilets will require special attention if a string/thread on here in the past is to be believed. The cost of security. Then the reputation. The cost of running the bar.

Where would it fit in here???

I dont know whats the best pub. Flints has the most customers with a turnover of about half a million. The pub with the least customers is the noost with about 190 thousand pound turnover.

Especially at these prices...

The new mareel ? 99p a pint 50p a nip well hope so .

I suppose you think the staff already employed should work day and night to service an perverse obsession about folk who work for the public.

The figure you quoted, where did this come from? If you forced the existing staff to give up rights and their public life you will still have to pay NI, pay pension contributions and sick pay when they go off work with stress. Also the accident rate will go up. Do you really want overtired stretched staff running a public building. Then there will be the cabs to run them home at 3 or 4 in the morning.

I'm not sure I follow what you mean about the DJs. Most want to put on the best night they can, but I'm sure there's others who would just go through the motions if they had to.

What I'm getting at is if you're running a club night until 1am, a percentage of the audience will leave early to beat the 1am entry cut-off at a club open until 2am. It's human nature for folk to want to carry on with a good night out - whether for dancing, socialising, bevvying or just enjoying the music. Remember that not everyone wants to get tanked up! Some folk just want to have a civilised night out.

It's a shame that local promoters are at a disadvantage because they can't hire a venue which can stay open later, whether in Lerwick or in country halls. Now that the Norscot Angling Club is closing, pretty much the only option in Lerwick for club promoters (or 'rock' music promoters for that matter) is the Legion and I can't recall the last time the Legion had a late license.

Posers also pay their bar staff the minimum wage , rarely invest any money back into the place and generally have the same DJ playing every weekend.

..........and it still manages to stand the test of time. The place is full every weekend, certainly on a Saturday and has been since the day it opened. They have had quieter times in the past and probably will do in the future but it goes round in circles.

If its full every weekend and they're making money what are they really going to change about the place? The bar, DJ Box, seating etc......seem to work where there at. Its not like its a massive venue where they can have various different layouts.

As someone said its only open 9pm -2am every Fri and Sat. Even then most people go at around 11pm and are pissed, why is he going to invest when he's making money?

I agree with you, people still go there , but they have 0 competition , apart from the pubs and the odd dj gig here or there , there is nothing else to go to ,
