sheepshagger
At least now, with Mareel on the way, maybe a few more living locally will be able to afford such luxuries. or maybe none of us
ArabiaTerra
It seems simple enough to me. We either spend the money on a fantastic cinema and music venue which will enrich the lives of everyone in Shetland, or we leave it on the stock exchange and watch it evaporate. I say spend the money.
Spinner72
^^ Shhhh. We're not supposed to mention that. 45Million can dissapear and its "oh well, never mind", but make an investment into the local economy and people just can't help themselves. Lets face it, Shetland without a music venue is like a resteraunt without a kitchen.

WiiMan
Never said I was "right". No you didn't, but you did imply that everyone else was wrong not to support Mareel! It's happening. Deal with it. You put a lot of faith in Sadly Clueless. He said the Bressa Brig was "happening" and he said the new Anderson High was "happening". Don't hold your breath waiting for him to deliver anything.
Njugle
^ I wasn't aware he was managing the project Wiiman, unless you know something we don't.
WiiMan
^ Never said he was project managing anything, merely pointed out that he was supposed to be providing the political leadership behind all of these projects. I use the term "leadership" very loosely.
WiiMan
unless you know something we don't. ........and anyway who are 'we'? Are 'we' Shetland Arts? If 'we' are perhaps 'we' would care to enlighten everyone else as to why the price has doubled in a year? Incredible inflation or gold plated, over-ambitious design? Njugle
Feisty! Well, in all honesty, when I first posted the comment I used "Wii" as a fun but, given your tone, I didn't think you'd appreciate it so I hastily changed it to "we". However, as I posted it: I mean 'we' the general public whom I sought to mean didn't think that the SIC were building Mareel. There is probably still plenty of uncertainty over the proposal I'd imagine, but I don't see it being dependent on Sandy Cluness' leadership (Quote Wiiman - "waiting for him to deliver anything"). Did that comment not relate to the vote that happened a while back? Can he still stop it now? Hence: Unless you know something we, the seemingly ignorant, don't. Maybe the DLO are trying for the building contract.
JohanofNess
unless you know something we don't. ........and anyway who are 'we'? Are 'we' Shetland Arts? If 'we' are perhaps 'we' would care to enlighten everyone else as to why the price has doubled in a year? Incredible inflation or gold plated, over-ambitious design? Probably an underestimate on the costing and the fact there has been large rises in construction materials in the last 18 months. None of which is Sandy Cluness's fault, the objecting councillors are the ones to point fingers at. Mareel wouldn't possibly be costing £15m had it been started when the project team had decided to start it. As I said many moons ago the councillors who objected to it have pushed up the cost by delaying it but not killing it off. At £9.2m it would have been a reasonable price (although I don't agree it needs to be built) but at £15m it's too expensive.
Spinner72
As I said many moons ago the councillors who objected to it have pushed up the cost by delaying it but not killing it off. So very true, so very clearly spelt out at the time, besides being obvious to anyone with a modicrum of midder wit. Some might say that was all "part of their plan", yet, given recent developments, it's clear such forethought is beyond certain people. Hint (if needed!) - not wise to use a council email address when making a complaint about council timewasting...
Roachmill
No you didn't, but you did imply that everyone else was wrong not to support Mareel!Eh, no. I'm "right" this time Which part of "I can easily accept why folk are for / against spending huge amounts of money" implies this? NRN
khitajrah
Sadly Clueless. Aw, I really didn't think adults did this. I thought that sort of name calling was left in the school-yard.
Jeemsie1989
^^ No way! Name-calling is a mature way of settling arguements andmaking your feeling apparent. For example: Jonathan Willies. On the topic of Jonathan Willies, is his attempt to have an external audit of the SIC's spending in certain areas just an attempt to again try and foil Mareel? Normally, I would pat him on the back for it, but I'm wary of his intentions now.
Njugle
No more comedy name permutations from either side please. Thank you.
