^^^ I know some of the civil engineers that work for the council and had the miss fortune as to working for them. Most arrant even civil to there employees. And I would not let them draw matchstick men never mind a drawing for a “mareel†for catching crabs. Never mind any form of architectural design

After all the effort to redevelop the waterfront they then spoil it with this monstrosity  All the effort that went into designing the new museum to ensure it portrayed the waterfront heritage and then they build something alongside which looks like it should be on the set of Star Wars

I think a few dozen pages back there'll be some stuff on how the building design was kept basic because of costs.

At that point you can have a more interesting building at higher costs.

Or make it smaller and more interesting for the same cost.

Or make it the same size and less interesting for the same cost.

Leaving asside any "should it have been built" views, should the design have been "more interesting" at a cost in money, or reduced facilities?

Well, there were architects employed on Mareel design that I am sure would have been keen to make something nice for their portfolios given the budget.

Civil engineers mostly just have to come in later and make sure the thing will stand up ;)

I know its a modern looking building but it is a concern due to size for people living at Browns Road they may lose a pretty good view of North harbour.

I think more windows need to be added and to be honest the design is just awful for the chosen location.

Sorry but I'm not convinced yet. :?

I can't remember what one of the mareel supporters had the tag line "I keep hearing of Shetlands world class music but it is treated as second class as far as I can see" or some such pish.

It turns out we subsidise the arty farty brigade to the tune of 750 grand/year. hardly what you would call ignoring the arts.

Then we take a look at the latest offering from Shetland arts, some examples of which are in this months New Shetlander. A picture of 1/2 a pony, a pic of the back of some eens head, a pic of a wall with some coats and hats hanging on it. If this is the talent we are funding then for gods sake stop it now. If this is what the head honcho's at Shetland arts trust call art then sack them for they are totaly of the mark.

apart from peerie brian I cant see how sacking the majority of them would adversly affect Shetland, quite a lot of them are sooth moothers and would get the first boat south withut the redicously high paid jobs they have here, thus freeing up some houses that are badly needed by locals, not to mention the savings made by no longer having to pay them.

If the council had simply repossessed the portion of the Judane shed that they probably still "own" as collateral for the probably still unpaid portion of loan, and set that slice on the Mareel site, it would have been much "more interesting" looking and much more in keeping with the neighbourhood.

I liked Karen Fraser's (Shetland Library) comments on radio shetland the other night. She said it was a shame that Mareel was being built on Lerwicks waterfront with lovely views of the harbour when the vast majority of the people using it wouldn't appreciate it.

If you go to watch a film you will be in a dark room with no windows.

If you go to hear a band it most likely will be at night.

Also it was interesting to hear the concerns of some on the same programme that if they build Mareel any buses visiting the museum no longer have anywhere to park as they use that area as there is a problem with the museum carpark. Hopefully someone will have a bit of foresight when they build the Mareel carpark.

This was taken from this months Shetland life

It is understood that even some Shetland Arts employees realise a subsidy for future years will be required and it remains to be seen where the money will come from.

why in gods name were these employees not listened to when the buisness plan(fairy tale) was put before the CT.

also thought the headline to the piece was very apt
