JohanofNess
how much will the satellite equipment cost or is it broadcast on sky.don't get me wrong if it will make money then go for it but before spending money make sure some one who knows how to make money looks into it. That's why I was making the point about having someone savvy doing the day to day running if you have a general manager for Mareel who can see opportunities like the Metallica gig etc and markets them well I think Shetland has enough people who would pay a tenner to see concerts live on a cinema screen or q&a's with film directors. I've always been opposed to Mareel being built with public money but I'm not opposed to it being built, I believe it can make money if the right person is put in charge and allowed to get on with it. If you have someone who just brings in every hollywood blockbuster and little diversity to what is being shown then I can see Mareel dying on its ass. I really do see what picturehouse has done with independent cinema as a very good model for what Mareel should do, hopefully SA is thinking along similar lines and not looking to cater for an entirely mainstream customer. The satellite gear as I understand can run through a normal domestic installation just like pay per view idea. That isn't to say that the dish might not have to be aimed at a different satellite but there is no big van out the back from what the manager at the Belmont said. I'm in no way qualified to say this, but given that a massive part of the "point" of Mareel is to allow all sorts of groups/individuals/companies the use of the venue and all its facilities, it certainly isnt all about what SA "put on". If there is something you think is a good idea and could make money, soon you will have a venue to let got on with it Personally I'm all for getting to see some classic (as opposed to classical) Cinema we have never had the chance to see properly here. Smokey and the Bandit, Star Wars etc.. Maybe even Titanic

Spinner72
^^ It was for a long time second only to the same years Star Wars as highest grossing of all time, and a much better film IMO. A true case of "they don't make 'em like they used to" One thing I am sure of, up here it would put more bums on seats than any arty farty black and white foreign language indie film.. peeriebryan
^ Some good points raised above, and all noted We're planning to show live feeds from events and festivals taking place out with Shetland, and broadcast events taking place in Mareel. The technical infrastructure to capture/show such events will be built into Mareel and there are many options to communicate with the outside world. The new fibre optic link should be on stream by December to which Mareel will be connected and there are facilities for outside broadcast units from TV stations to 'plumb in' to Mareel's infrastructure And brian you are in receipt of public money so why not discuss it in a public forum. What Shetland Arts does with public money is well documented and the information is freely available. You're asking me to discuss my colleagues private lives and businesses, which I'm not prepared to do. If you want to talk to my colleagues, as ever, feel free to get in touch - 01595 743

jimmy parks
The problem with Mareel, which hasn't really been touched on, is simply that Shetland is FAR TOO SMALL for a project of this size. Jeez did anyone ever hear of a place with a population of 22,000 getting something like this. Music venue is totally unnessessary. And a cinema should have been allowed for in the Clickamin Centre, perhaps it could have doubled up with the bowls hall. Skaterboy has a point, far too many decisions about Shetland are made by people who know naething about the place.
hazyday83
As a person who lives far from Lerwick, i of course think it is a disgusting desicion to build Mareel. 7 million pounds of council funding and a heavy subsidy each year to run the place, financial suicide. I find it utterly insane for the council to take on a social project like this in the central belt with one hand and are trying to destroy communities by depriving them of a local school for their children with the other hand. I think this council need to get a reality check and when considering money and 'cuts'. Stop capital projects unless totally necessary and look at ways in which existing buildings etc can be more cost effective for example schools could have a small wind turbine to counteract the cost of heating. I could rant all day about this, as i see it all as a bit of common sense.
Spinner72
^^ So could I, for exactly the same reason, but with the completely opposite viewpoint The problem with Mareel, which hasn't really been touched on, is simply that Shetland is FAR TOO SMALL for a project of this size. On the contrary, this is brought up very regularly on this thread, and as such there is no point in repeating the obvious, just take a read back, or a look at the business plan. Roachmill
current broadband speeds up here would make the quality of any show of this type quite poor, I would think.Shetland is more than capable of streaming high quality media down the road right now. Even more so once the fiber lands.

What were they thinking?[/sarcasm] I towt da decision on funding it was made by councillors (and external funders), but den, maybe du meant dat dey ken nithin aboot the Shaetland eyder?
