shetlandpeat
It is a competition, it has winners and losers. Tendering is a competition. Companies compete to get the project or commission. No scandal. Seems one was more competitive though the weighting could have swayed the result. Who cares, tis done. Fatal Paper Cut
Sounds like a tender to me. It's not unknown to do it with a submission fee, if that's what happened. Looking at the runner up, I'd say the better design won.

mate64
Peat, your last few posts are an inspiration to others. e.g. “The power music and arts has to get folk involved in their community is immenseâ€, etc. You have had some negative reactions to your posts over the years but you continue to be positive on this board.Good luck with your ambition to get involved with Mareel. The Blind School entry must have got lost in the post.

ArabiaTerra
Shetland-boys expressed an opinion that they believe Mareel parking is quite adequate, I expressed an opinion that I believe it is quite inadequate. Do I care whose right or wrong? Not one jot. Just expressing my opinion as people do on a public forum, end of. If that's your definition of criticising and slagging something off, well, you must meet little else, as pretty much nothing pleases all of the people all of the time. It is that you slagged off the Mareel parking while completely ignoring the fact that there are three large public car parks within 5 minutes walking distance of the place that is annoying. You've cherry-picked an issue, ignored the context, and then declared self-righteously that "everyone is entitled to their own opinion" and "I'm only saying". Fine, but don't then get all het-up when you then get slagged off for such an obvious attempt at trolling. You're entitled to your own opinion, and everyone else is entitled to call your opinion rubbish. Edit: And now I realise that the post I'm answering is 5 pages back and has been quite adequately answered by others. Oh well, any more for the pile-on? (I don't know, I take a couple of days off to watch Buffy and... ) Well, I'll be honest, that's more car parking space in the vicinity than I had realised - yep, I'm not afraid to hold my hand up and admit when I'm wrong Well said. unlinkedstudent
^ The thing is though, is it ALL public car parking? Perhaps somebody working in one of the units on the business park would know. There's been more than one development elsewhere in the UK where venues have used neighbouring business parks' car spaces only for the Tenants of the units to complain months after a venue opened. It is possible (and as I've said, I don't know) that the likes of NFU, Neil Risk, Shetland TV and so forth pay a service charge perhaps for the car parking for their own staff and visitors to their premises. Now if (and yep, I said if) they complain that they can't always park, then you could be in a situation whereby barriers were installed - because in essence, it wasn't and never was 'public car parking'. The rumour machine down this end has it that DITT's scheme said they could use the Co-op's car park (PMSL - it's always full) and that scheme never got off the ground. Weird though, Clickamin has parking spaces for a lot more cars than Mareel. Of course, IF there was any difficulties concerning the parking, no doubt the management could adopt the attitude that the staff couldn't park in the car park. Well roll on the HARD opening and then we can all see just how well Mareel performs. Have any well known groups confirmed bookings yet? Oops, I've just posted on here again - does that mean Facebook is gonna crash and the internet speed drop through the floor again?
piggywiggie
Or if there is no parking.... Here is an idea! WALK!
JustMe
There will be a Mareel!. Confess I liked one of the alternative designs a bit more but Mareel will happen. So let us see what Shetland Arts are prepared to do to get paying customers into the building. I hope it will be good and will get customers from all parts of Shetland as well as people from visiting yachts and perhaps even a few customers from Orkney and the Scottish Mainland. Have been looking at timetables for North Isles buses and maybe it would not take all that much tweaking of bus services to let us enjoy performances in Mareel. Alternative during the off season months is for Lerwick's hotels and Guest Houses to offer a decent deal for people visiting Mareel. Maybe with a bit of good will the school hostels could even get involved in this. Beds lying empty all weekend. Not convinced that parking is going to be a problem but at this late time maybe I ought to say that there ought to be parking places near to Mareel for coaches from rural Shetland. grift
For the folk who seem to be so worried about parking issues....... why don't you call Roads and Transport and/or Planning at the SIC? You're more likely to get an answer from them rather than continually posting concerns and questions on an anonymous forum. (not directed at JustMe, by the way!) Spinner72
The bus depot is literally a stones throw away (one of the best aspects of the location IMO) and much of the nearby parking can easily handle busses if need be, but most of the time people will just be being dropped off and picked up as they usually are. Do remember its a community venue, its not just up to Shetland Arts to put on gigs etc! Unless something has changed recently, most Lerwick hotels offer "Shetlander" weekend rates, invariably cheaper than a taxi to toft, plus you get a nice breakfast.
