stilldellin
^ Personally I think all pensioners should be allocated an on site parking space when they make their booking....
shetlandpeat
Odd thing to say, my Dad as a pensioner would run to the dump and back from Freefield. I wonder how many here could do that, 2 or 3 times a week as he did. I think if there is any preference, it should stay about mobility.

Ghostrider
Canna believe you're STILL speaking aboot parking! FFS. Well, maybe us yokels are just far too used to door to door transport when we go on the pish. We'd be slummin it having to walk and climb steps to car parks, when rolling out the door of Fawlty Towers and in the door of a minibus is what we've become accustomed to over the years and expect as a minimum standard. Muppet
It is possible (and as I've said, I don't know) that the likes of NFU, Neil Risk, Shetland TV and so forth pay a service charge perhaps for the car parking for their own staff and visitors to their premises. Now if (and yep, I said if) they complain that they can't always park, then you could be in a situation whereby barriers were installed - because in essence, it wasn't and never was 'public car park You don't let things drop easily do you? Even after you admitted that you were wrong and had based your previous rant on something you actually knew nothing about, here you go repeating it all again! Well, I'll be honest, that's more car parking space in the vicinity than I had realised - yep, I'm not afraid to hold my hand up and admit when I'm wrong - can the same be said for the rest of ya on other points in this thread though? That was obviously said with conviction! Can I just repeat that these parking spaces were not included in the figure I gave of 254 within the North Ness area and that still leaves the 293 spaces at the Viking, Fort, Market street and old Swimming Pool car parks. Go a little further still and you have Burgh Road, Toll Clock, Victoria Pier as well as all the on street parking all in easy walking distance. Weird though, Clickamin has parking spaces for a lot more cars than Mareel. Clickimin has a larger capacity then Mareel. But having said that, there are still more parking spaces at Mareel, or would you like me to go out and prove that one for you? Actually, you can go on google earth and count them yourself. Are you still seriously suggesting that there is not enough parking? You really do like to squeeze every last drop out of an argument! Er, Debate! Ghostrider
Are you still seriously suggesting that there is not enough parking? I dunno about 'er indoors, she can speak for herself, but yes, actually I am. On the basis that its at the very least "cheeky" that a new build facility is going to have to be relying on general "public" parking for part of its core parking during larger events. Having general "public" parking as backup to cope with overspill during exceptionally well attended events, yes, but as something they're relying on for their customers on a regular basis, no. Simply because it is there for anyone and everyone who wishes to use it whenever they need to, and on that basis cannot ever be relied on to be available as and when Mareel hosts an event that needs it. Mareel's dedicated parking amounts to circa 60 car spaces for staff, service and customer parking as far as can be ascertained, for a building which potentially could have in excess of 900 customers in it at one time. Either the expected number of customers is quite low in relation to capacities (in which case the financial projections in the business plan are bunkum), or there will be issues with lack of parking space, take your pick. ariel
Is there a case for locking this thread as it seems to have descended into repetitive tediousness?
piggywiggie
Maybe they don't have as much parking because they don't expect that many people to be there that at one point?
unlinkedstudent
@ Muppet - my humble apologies, I had overlooked your mention of not including the business park spaces - oops, I made an error! Hands up again. Oooh, Status Quo to play Clickimin and blimey, 1,200 tickets a certain someone is hoping to sell (It has capacity for 1,200?) - why mention that gig? Simples - peeps seem to be assuming that there will be FA else going on in Lerwick when anything is on at Mareel. Moving swiftly on ... When is the 'hard' opening expected? How's the fundraising for equipment coming on? All staff in place then? Did have a quick look at Mareel website but ...
peeriebryan
^ I think locking the thread may be a little heavy handed, but with my moderators hat on I kindly request that we move on from the parking debate. I can only assure everyone that Planning, Roads and all the other relevant agencies have looked very closely at all aspects of Mareel, including traffic and parking. Scenarios have been planned, regulations met, risks assessed etc. The basis of the parking issue is that whilst Mareel's onsite parking area is relatively small there are many other parking spaces available within a short distance (well into the 100s, as Muppet has exemplified) which are relatively quiet during Mareel's peak usage times. I'm not sure there's much more I can add.
Shoogler
^^^Thanks Bryan,How you can put up with the cack from the gruesome twosome, either in your part time Mod role or more importantly in your day job, who knows. I really do think that this pair need to get out more so when Mareel opens you may even get a chance to meet them first hand and i'm sure that will be most edifying! peeriebryan
When is the 'hard' opening expected? We expect everything to be fully operational by October. There will be regular events and film screenings before then though. Shetland Arts only 'got the keys' a couple of weeks ago and the contractors are still snagging, so the handover process is ongoing. I completely understand that folk are keen to know an 'opening date' (believe me, I'm asked that countless times every day!) but each space has different requirements before it's ready for use. For example, the foyer has to be complete before the public can enter, but film screenings won't be affected if the recording studio, rehearsal facilities and/or education spaces aren't fully operational. Hence why we're trying to avoid being drawn into announcing an 'opening date'. There's still a lot to do, including installing, testing, tweaking and commissioning equipment, staff training and familiarisation, fitting out he cafe bar etc etc. But everyone is doing their best to get the building open ASAP. Rest assured, we'll let you know when we're ready for you How's the fundraising for equipment coming on? Most of the equipment is already on site and currently being fitted by our technicians. I'd like to take my hat off to them for the massive effort they're currently putting in. All staff in place then?Yes.
