MuckleJoannie
When the consultation for buses was on I was told by one of the officials that they were speaking to Mareel about having evening buses fitting in with the finishing times for films. After all the bus station is only a few minutes walk from it. As for the problem about closing the bar to other patrons the announcement today about Halloween with The Revellers said there will be a pop up bar in the foyer for cinema goers. http://www.facebook.com/MareelShetland/posts/10151114383954436
Ghostrider
"The ERDF has increased grant funding for Shetland’s flagship cinema and music venue Mareel by £276,505, and additional funds have been approved in principle by Highlands and Islands Enterprise and Creative Scotland". http://www.shetnews.co.uk/news/5736-agencies-approve-extra-cash-for-mareel Did someone say all costs would have to be settled from the orginal £12.1 Million contract budget?!? You will be recalling SIC telling them not to bother applying for more cash. As you can see, not all sources of funding were closed to further requests. ariel
Highly impressed that Mareel has secured more funding without looking to the Council. And hasn't spent millions without producing a building to show for it, like the SIC has a tendency to do. Well done, Shetland Arts.

Well done, Shetland Arts. your easily impressed then!I am not impressed that the whole building contract from day one seems to have been so poorly managed. It is obvious that it is way over budget. What would have happened if they did not secure this funding, and is it enough? I would have been impressed if it had come in on time and on budget, or better still below budget. If I recall the recreational trust managed it with all their buildings. I've been a supporter of Mareel from day one, but have always been concerned regarding the finances. Hopefully I will be proved wrong.

If you look in this document for the proposed revised bus services you will see that some routes will have an 11pm bus on Fridays and Saturdays http://www.zettrans.org.uk/consultation/documents/PublicConsultationDocument_000.pdf

Time of showing before that one, 17:30hrs - probably too early if you only finish work at 5pm. In fairness to Mareel though, the same can be said about using other venues in town; however, not all of those are 'public' buildings. Surely though, in this day and age, it could be advantageous for both Mareel and the transport providers to get together to find a solution? I've seen the night bus already quite full when it drops peeps off in the sarf end at a weekend.
ariel
There would be little point Mareel ending films by 11pm considering the 11pm buses haven't been introduced yet.

A bus currently leaves Viking bus station on Saturday nights at 11.00pm and gets down here at 11.45pm. Edit: I think there is also another bus at 10.30pm or thereabouts on a Friday night also but without checking, I'm not 100% sure.

You can see why video rental PPV and the like are so popular - watch when you like, no transport worries, stock up with food and booze to order. Twerto
Thats good to know.. mikel
Was someone up all night editing Mareel's Facebook page deleting all the negative comments? Had a quick look when I got in last night, plenty about the time it took to get a drink at the bar and the stewards. All gone when I was up at 7 this morning. Surely they would like to take on board the negative aswell as the positive, it is the opinion of its customers it is censoring afterall which isn't a good idea. Folk aren't stupid we know it isn't a smoothly run operation!
JAStewart
Last night was great! Loads of people, good music, cheap drinks etc. But the bar queues... holy hell the bar queues. It was taking about an hour to get people served. 5 people to serve 600 folk? Ain't gonna work.
