Marooned in Maywick
This thread has turned into a bit of a car crash. And bug - whichever 'we' you mean...you don't speak for me.
Ghostrider
Ghostie would like to know how many concerts have been fed into Mareel and how many fed out?I don't consider it to be either or. When planning and budgeting for visiting artists, all events are taken into account within that budget. But if a 'country' event and a 'Mareel' event was budgeted for separately, the event in Mareel would generate more income that the country event. So if I understand your question correctly, town events tend to make country events more viable. Ahh, no. What I was getting at was, when the "what we will use Mareel for" list was doing the rounds, there was talk of streaming out live shows being held in Mareel to audiences elsewhere (worldwide?), and live shows being held elsewhere being streamed in to audiences in Mareel. Obviously the streaming out won't necessarily get much local publicity, unless perhaps as an incidental in reviews or in local feedback (gossip?), but there's been no live shows streamed in as yet that I've been aware of, nor has there been any mention that there are plans to do any. Okay, its only been a couple of months, but given the number of "name" performers touring at any one given time, who at this stage in their careers wouldn't consider getting any nearer to Shetland than a couple of shows in Scottish population centres, I would have thought there would have been a reasonable few opportunities to arrange something. Is this kind of usage for Mareel still planned for the future, and if so do we have a rough idea how far in to the future it may be before it happens? Or is it all in the laps of the Shetland Telecom gods getting their infamous fibre all put together.

The opening speeches are supposed to be streamed live at 5.45 today. I heard via Twitter. http://www.shetland.org/60N/index.php

Mareel already has a fibre connection to Internet and is using it.I attended a conference / event last month that was live webcast to attendees outwith Shetland. Ghostrider
^ Okay, so there's something of a system in place at least that has some amount of capability, which is a start. What I'm referring to though is the streaming out, and particularly in, of live gigs to/from nationally (worldwide?). It was discussed as one of the things Mareel would (could?) do waay back, but is getting no mention now the building is up and running. I'm just wondering if anybody knows whether the idea has had the chain pulled on it, or if its in filed under "yet to be sorted".
shetlandpeat
I attended a conference / event last month that was live webcast to attendees outwith Shetland. The capability seems to be there already. If it goes one way it can go another. Businesses can by bandwidth and have that guaranteed. Not like the domestic set up where I will have upto 50mb, if I were to pay for 50, then it is not shared. For instance, a local council here runs on a guaranteed 10mb quite happily.I am happy to push for this here, would be great to share a radio show. It was hardly rivetting stuff but it does seem to be technically available.
Ghostrider
^ Good, good, at least it proves the basics are there and working. But the question still remains, do SA have plans to use this technology to buy in live shows from nationally (worldwide?) for viewing by a paying public audience, as was mooted in the early days. Or has the idea of doing so been abandoned, postponed until whatever/indefinitely?

Ghostrider
^....and I'm not, given the thread title and site owner? Far better and more useful info has turned up here than on the "official" SA spin laden web pages.

Mareel is connected on a genuine fibre connection and coulld easily be supplied with many Gbps. But, I doubt the budget would run to that!Anyway, if they are streaming out a production, they only need a few Mbps down to a media distribution outfit in London. This is how Up Helly Aa coverage is done - 5 Mbps to a server in London, then 1.5 Gbps going worldwide.

Or has the idea of doing so been abandoned, postponed until whatever/indefinitely? I can't see why not. It is becoming more and more common in cinemas all over the place and with the equipment in place, it would logically be a matter of a picking suitable events. The VUE coming soon listings give a good idea of whats being done. No idea how pricing works for such events. Logically they would be more expensive than a movie but cheaper than an actual event, but thats a wide range! The Rolling Stones are also promoting a big live transmission of one of the shows in their upcoming tour. (Not live obviously, but I hope Mareel gets a chance to show the Hendrix Woodstock set )
Ghostrider
^ Very similar to what I was thinking. There's several artistes out there right now I'd make a point of trying to get to see and wouldn't baulk at paying, say £20-£25 to see on the big screen as an alternative to seeing them live. Obviously the real thing is preferable, but Mareel is in something of a unique position, in that the cost, time and hassle of getting from here to a gig in say Glasgow or even Aberdeen is prohibitive, and something like this could well be a viable alternative. Colin
http://www.shetnews.co.uk/news/5906-mareel-seeks-extra-cash-from-sic I suppose most have (by now) seen the above. Personally, with 'essential' services threatened with major cuts, I hope that the SIC has the guts to tell them where to go..
