shetlander
Leaving aside my general opposition to the amount of public money being spent here, what is it with the constant perception that youth crime or heavy drinking will be overcome if there is 'more to do' in Shetland? When I lived in Glasgow, I don't recall the multitude of cinemas, bowling alleys, ice rinks etc keeping neds off the street or folk out of the pub. Having a CMV may well be a positive addition to the local social scene but only for the type of folk likely to use it which, lets face it, won't be everyone. If it succeeds in turning some of Shetland's neds or alcoholics into well behaved teetotal cinema goers (in part at least) then great, but I won't be holding my breath. tirvaluk
Why did the Cinema and Music Venue, have to be linked together.I think it was the film fanatics method of getting the whole project passed by the council.I think the music venue could be a great idea, but it will never make money, just look at the Lemon Tree in Aberdeen, and there was a similair place in Inverness(Can't mind da name),the Lemon Tree was threatened with closure a few years ago, they had to go begging to the council for more funds. The one in Inverness closed down,as the council wouldn't give them any more funds. Both Aberdeen and Inverness have hugely more catchment areas than Shetland.I would love to see it work, but we have to be realistic. Twerto
Depending on how the place is managed, For example they are able to work it that they could Cover ALL aspect of music from the traditional folk festival pigeon hole through to the night club pigeon hole. I think it could work better than places like Aberdeen or Inverness purely because there are not the purpose built facility's up here, Unless you like going to sports centres or country halls and listening to bands sounding crap because it not built for complementing music or even worse being packed into Posers like sardines. where as in Aberdeen and Inverness they are competing against lots of other venues. trout
In today's current climate where these people could have so easily gone and "hired in a consultant" from God knows where to create a name for the place I think they should be congratulated on opening it out to the public. It's going ahead, that much is for sure! I've been struggling though to think of an apt Shetland dialect or Shetland norn word for it.
NewMagnie
Can't seem to find a word for 'guilded chanty' in Jakobsen's...
trout
^^ Look up the word "Øædna" phonetically sounded udna? I think it is? More than likely not in any of these modern dictionaries, but it means basically what you're looking for It's along the same lines as floccinaucinihilipilification! Twerto
Does anyone know if there is anywhere online you can see plans for the proposed music/cinema venue? I was thinking last night.. how it could be possible to basically have it all in one building ( I know that is what they are doing ) I mean have one area for music and films. In a similar style to the existing north star.. with a bit of sprucing up of course. This way your not having to run two Rooms ( for want of a better term ) In my opinion this would mean less running cost.. as in less staff needed.. and less time the building will be left empty. as in when a film is not showing you could have a band or concert lined up. this day and age of modern engineering you could even create a floor that can be lifted up and down.. when its down it is a nice seated arena.. for a cinema or concert. when it up you've got a nice dance floor area for when it has bands or Dj's playing. Yes the initial building cost could be higher.. but I would think that the long term running cost would be lower.
humptygrumpty
Has anyone given any consideration to the blatant breach of this councils planning "laws" that dictate that no new builds are to be undertaken below 5M from the high watermark , well this new cinema or the musem is well well below that. Or is it just the case of "we can do it but no one else can". Various people have been turned down on the basis of this so why and how is this to be allowed ? Twerto
just to be pedantic. but the area outlined for the music venue is well above 5m above sea level.. but i know what you are getting at..
humptygrumpty
I havent seen the plans of it but I thought it was to be near the new musem and that certainly isnt 5M above. Did you find out where to veiw the plans online ?
Carlos
Last I heard the plans are still being tweaked and I don't see anything online except for the inital contest submission. There are some sketches here thoughhttp://www.shetlandtoday.co.uk/search_detail.asp?ContentID=20892and those show the building built up so the floor level is above the 5m level. While the museum site is definately a "calculated risk" at best, at least in this area the CMV make more sense.
Twerto
Ahh i thought it was further up.. as in where the big cleared are is above pete bardells office.
Carlos
I think I heard the floor level as something above the 5m mark with a fair bit of room to spare, but I can't remember the number, so I'll not confuse the issue any more.... moorit
I'm sure I overheard a guy in The Wheel bar on Monday morning saying his granny had heard it was 5m above sea level. So that must be right.
