Carlos
I'm sure I overheard a guy in The Wheel bar on Monday morning saying his granny had heard it was 5m above sea level. So that must be right. Ah well, I CAN do better than that accuracy I did see some work in progress plans, and what comes to mind was the floor level was 5.7m..... but I really can't remember if that is right or not. BTW, if the sea reaches 5.7m above datum, there will be a lot more flooded in Lerwick than the cinema....

Carlos
Well I'd guess an architects plans would all be referenced to Ordinance Datum, but as I'm struggling to remember one number I'll not commit to saying that was on the plan

trout
16 February 2007Written by John Robertson and originally published here There was also controversy at Wednesday's meeting about Shetland Arts and its proposed new cinema and music venue. Trustees on the charitable trust were asked to agree in principle to stumping up if the project loses money, which its business plan says could be up to a maximum of £100,000 a year. Gussie Angus said he had never accepted the business plan and believed the actual deficit would be far more than £100,000. He wanted the issue of pledging funds to be halted until a believable business plan is brought forward. He said it would be "dishonourable" for the trust to agree to fund a future deficit which might come back to bite the next crop of trustees once the cultural complex is built. Jim Irvine waded in too, saying the complex would be a white elephant. Taking the other side, Mr Manson said young folk in the community thought the cinema and music venue was highly desirable and were very much looking forward to it. He was supported by the convener who said it was the one issue that all young people who came to visit him asked about. Billy Stove warned that the charitable trust's backing in principle was needed to give confidence to the lottery funders before they committed to a £2.2m grant for the venue. Mr Ratter advised members to be aware that Shetland was quite a diverse community and that there were actually a few people who were young, middle-aged or not interested in sport. He said it was important to try to serve as broad a range of people as possible to try to keep them living in Shetland. An attempt by Mr Angus to delay any decision to underwrite the venue's running costs was defeated.
Kathy
Hi folks - I've been dying to get in on this debate but it's taken me a while to master the technology (it's an age thing). I'm Kathy Hubbard, the Shetland Arts person who's been working on this project for the last 7 years. It's been really interesting to read the stuff posted on this site, and it might take me a while to answer everyone's queries/doubts/criticisms but I can at least start by telling you where we are with the money, design, etc. We have to get a reasonably detailed design in with our application to the National Lottery by 7th April - we're still working on it (we are expecting an awful lot from a pretty tight area) but as soon as it's ready to go, I'll put it on the Shetland Arts website and let you know. The costs have gone up, as Gordon Hank reminded us all in the paper this week, but most of that is stuff we have little control over - rising timber and steel prices, rising construction costs EVERYWHERE with the Olympic Buildfest on the horizon - welcome to the free market economy - it's affecting every capital building project in Britain, not just the CMV. Loads to put in once I get a minute about programming, and the range of activities we hope to run there but for now, thanks for all the name suggestions, keep 'em comin'. Oh, and it will be Shetland Arts who will be running the facility, not the Council, although the SIC will probably own the builkding and the land it's on. If you'd like to see the plans, ask any questions, discuss any aspects of the project directly, please call me on 01595 744986, it would be great to hear from you. trout
Hello Kathy and let me be the first in welcoming you to the Shetlink online community. I do trust that your time spent here will be pleasant. If you ever need assistance in anything, be it technologically or otherwise, don't hesitate to send a PM and or email to any of the team. Kind regards, trout
JAStewart
Ok moderators hear me out... despite the old poll being totally suggestive to vote 'no' i'm interested in seeing what people are thinking now. PLEASE don't make this into a Cinema argument thread, there is already one. I voted "Yes" for a cinema music venue originally and yes again just now. Fjool
In general, these forum polls need a way for people to update their opinion. I think I will start a new protest group: Fickle folks finding favour for flexible forum functions. peeriebryan
Eeh gads! Another CMV thread! I do agree that the original poll could be considered biased, and folks opinion change, so I'll merge this new thread and archive/edit the poll in the original thread If you've just cast a vote in this new thread, please give me five mins and re-cast your vote in the original thread
peeriebryan
Poll update Original poll results (started Sat Jan 07, 2006 - closed Wed Mar 14, 2007) Do you want SIC to spend at least £7m on a new purpose built venue? 50% [56 votes] Do you want SIC to spend considerably less on upgrading existing venues? 49% [55 votes] New poll started Wed Mar 14, 2007

Ghostrider
You need a fourth option. "Yes, but not in the proposed location/per current building plans/management structure/operators". The idea has potential and is desirable as far as I'm concerned, but I have no faith in any of the proposals concerning it's creation and existence. peeriebryan
You need a fourth option. "Yes, but not in the proposed location/per current building plans/management structure/operators".That's a bit long! I added "yes, but not current proposal" ^ I think the location is OK, and the building plans are very good indeed (as far as a multi use building goes), but I don't have much idea of the detail of the management structure/operators
