Mareel - Cinema & Music Venue

^ That's another inaccuracy in the CN-plus report. They stated that...

Shetland Arts Development Agency is inviting bids for a £8.3 million contract to build a new centre for cinema and live music....

I'm not sure where they got a figure of £8.3 million from as the construction contract will depend on the tenders received. The QS estimate is £9.3 million, but that includes many other costs such as statutory permissions, various professional fees, land purchase etc

I'm not sure where peeriebryan got the figure of £9.3 million from. Shetland Arts' own propaganda from July last year quotes £7.1 million, rising to £7.58 million by May 2008. Is the extra £2 Million how much extra it cost to stick the Shetland Arts offices in? Nice view over the harbour I hear!

And your previous identity on Shetlink was???

As far as I was aware 9.3 million was the figure being quoted by Shetland Arts. I recall an earlier eight point something which didn't have the second floor developed in educational spaces as is planned but I don't remember seeing the 7.1 million - what piece of 'propaganda' as you put it did this appear in?

Note to MOD: Perhaps it might be worth checking the votes to see how many people on both sides have been re-registering under different names.

As far as I know, there is no way to check who voted for which option and nor should there be. These polls are for fun only and really should not be relied upon to provide any useful information.

As for registering under different names: this is against the T&C and we can, to a reasonable degree, see who has been doing this. Action has already been taken against individuals who have flagrantly abused the registration system and we continue to discourage people from creating multiple accounts.

why waste money on this building that we dont need , sure garrision theatre is fine and well there is the marts if you need a music venue

Have you heard the sound in the Marts? It's even worse than the Clickimin. Move reverb than playing a Phil Spector record in a dustbin. Both also have no soul. A music venue needs to be fit for purpose, and at the moment there is nothing in Shetland that even comes close.

Where is it against the T&C? Begun looking up points when T&C is cited but on many occasions can't actually find anything relevant. Not trying to cause trouble. Just interested to find out which line covers multiple usernames.

@MJ: This is rather off-topic by now. Best to take this up in the thread that already exists for this purpose: http://www.shetlink.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=4752

Specifically, I refer you to Njugle's comments:

In another way of looking at it, the terms "impersonation and trolling" in #1 of the T&Cs have a flexible remit.

In short, if we are aware of someone doing it, and it annoys us we have the right to cancel their account.

I haven’t been registered full stop before on Shetlink.

A new cash negative establishment that only provides better facilities than we currently have is economic suicide. Yes I have watched many films in the garrison and it does the job fine. The only complaint is the chairs. Mind you they could afford some good “stressless†leather recliners with massage function for £2000 each. That’s only £400000 for a 200 seated luxury cinema. Now what could they spend the other £8.9M on?? Future education facilities with a larger economics department to educate the locals in financial prudence. No stuff it lets go sub prime!!

That's what I was thinking, you've got about 22k people on Shetland, if there was a significant demand for a cinema then why haven't one of the chains put one up?. Cinemas make the bulk of their money from selling all the junk food in the foyer, is the current building planning on selling similar tat to keep ticket prices affordable?. Same goes for the major supermarkets, Tesco aren't building a new one they're buying an existing medium to small one from a competitor who seems to be happy to get rid of it. Just because funds can be raised for a facility like Mareel the question still remains "do we really need it" or more to the point do you need one that costs £8m plus and by the time the wolves from down here come sniffing round the job you'll be shelling out more than that.

I have to admit when I first started reading about this I was a little puzzled about everything they're trying to pack into the building, it does seem to me that there are better things that the money could be spent on that would benefit more of the community.

personally I was kind of hoping it might be like this place http://www.dca.org.uk/home.asp decent coffee close to the railway station in Dundee. Been a few years since I was last there, but it had the sort of vibe the lemon tree once had.

Shetland doesn't have a large enough population to support a big chain cinema, Aberdeen has a hard enough time supporting it's 2 and a half and that's with the city having 200,000+, then there's all the surrounding area and the islands.
