Marooned in Maywick Posted July 7, 2008 Report Share Posted July 7, 2008 Councillors who have stated Halls Committee and other organisation memberships where bars are involved or music performance should perhaps be asked to withdraw from the debate too - is there not the faintest possibility that Mareel might affect their committee/group/whatever?. Not sure if it's a Councillor thing or a Bigton Hall Constitution thing, but, as far as I'm aware, we're not allowed to have councillors on our hall committee. Unless I'm very much mistaken, Bill Manson is closely related to a Shetland music producer and Sandy Clueless must have voted on the cinema and music venue project while his son was employed at Shetland Arts! Baron Farkoff Posted July 7, 2008 Report Share Posted July 7, 2008 I think that the breathtaking level of speculation holding the tenuous events of the narrative together in this article delivers maximum fuss about absolutely nothing.It also betrays a certain ignorance of the nature of community values on this wonderful island. If one benefits here then another benefits. It's not to ones' advantage to do anyone over here and if you did it would you be shooting yourself in the foot. Surely everyone works togrther in some small way or another in order to keep everything "groovy"(and i know you all know what I mean)even if it means leaving them be to get on with their thing which you do not agree with.Anyway,the letter is a tacit admission that Mareel benefits the wider community: If Mareel does well the the bands do well, and put their new records in the record shop,which does well in an age when the music industry is in a massive process of reorganisation- the record shops are in more danger of closing than just about any quality venue you could think o,The money's in touring nowadays and that is the preferred point of sale for merchandise. Get 'em while thy're hot. Then the bands continue to live and work here and do brilliantly well at increasing Shetlands' better than average standing in the worlds music network. But I'm not sure the ombudsman would agree!Exaggerated to make a point of course, and I'd agree that if rules have not been followed regarding potential conflicts of interest then it should be followed up, but I have doubts that the kinds of 2nd and 3rd hand possible connections that have been brought up have much more ground than my own fiction. Any truth that there's still several million pounds to find? Shetland Arts said that the earliest builders may be on site is August. As far as I'm aware tenders are being invited now or soon. I can only assume Jordan is using the same calculator that Shetland Arts used for their business plan! £5.1m from the SIC, £2.1m from the Lottery and a hopeful £900,000 from the SIC again doesn't add up to the estimated £10.6m on my fingers never mind my calculator. The way prices are rising £10.6m must be seen to be fairly optimistic. Maybe all the councillors will at least be there for the meeting this time! I entirely forgot that money is completely irrelevant when it comes to hugely over budget projects!Shetland Arts said that the earliest builders may be on site is August. As far as I'm aware tenders are being invited now or soon.Just been havin a wee look at the EU web-site. It says there that the tendering process takes 52 days to complete. We've even considered only holding tenders open for 30 days because of two large increases in tar, concrete and steel coming in august and october. What happens if the tenderers come in with a price for Mareel far in excess of the budget?. Who pays the bill or do all the funders know they may be required to provide more cash.
