Supermarkets in Shetland - prices, ethics and experiences

I do agree that certain retailers need to up their game, but who is going to take the risk to start a small business when Tesco can simply brush them aside in one foul swoop?

This is the point I've been trying to make for weeks, I really believe that some people have very little foresight and are clouded by the fact the Tesco=cheap, but will that truly be the case in a few years?.

In 3 or 4 years people will be thinking 'hindsight would be a great thing'.

World Tastes will close now and I have a feeling there will be one or two more before the year is out, such a shame!

Cheers

oh i agree they are too big. but thats how it is now. i still wonder why the coop did not swap sites when they took over somerfields. they can't be beat on selling price unless your another large retailer. i still remember the old independant supermarkets when i was a kid. they are all gone.

it is a shame but shops close. its really upto the shop owner to try to fit into the market not the market to the shop. its easy to blame tesco for there failer but no one has been forcing anyone to shop there. there few shelves of asian food can't match a proper asian food shop. i seem to remember very simular stock in there other stores 4 years ago.

You're right Paul, shops do close but In the case I'm talking about (World Tastes) it looks to me as if it will shut as a direct effect of Tesco. I've not been in a 'proper' Asian food shop in my life so I can't argue with you there but the shop is stacked with all sorts of stuff and if you want something they'll order it in. What concerns me is that according to the report, Tesco seem to be selling the exact same brands in the exact same sizes as they keep, at half the cost, something not quite adding up there.

From www.shetlandtimes.co.uk

"Responding to World Tastes’ concerns, Mr Clelland said Tesco was simply responding to what its customers asked it to put in the shop. “They’ve asked for upmarket foodstuffs and Chinese and Asian groceries are part of that. We’re just concentrating on delivering the store that our customers have asked us to deliver."

I'd be very interested to see the market research that resulted in the stocking of identical niche products to an established retailer.

reason ive not been in world tastes is due to the poor location of the shop.

and ive bought the stuff in tescos as its easy.

much like 80% of shoppers i wont go out of my way to spend my money which is getting harder and harder to earn and more and more taken off you. if the shop was on the street where most ppl go once a week id be more inclined to pop in.

i dont think they are closing as a direct result of tescos more likely that they havent been making enough money for over a year or more.

out of interest where do all the takeaways buy there stock?

Oversight by council to blame for extensive range of non-food goods in Tesco

Is our planning department up to the job?

Well if this is a true state of affairs. Then it say a lot more about poor quality of the Shetland planning department.

Is there ever been a business. In the history of time. Who has not exploited the wording, in any legal document. To there own advantage.?

I bet the Viking Energy team are now going through there own planning application with a fine tooth comb. Looking at every dot and comma To get the result they want.

I agree it's not well situated as you can't get out the car, take two steps and walk into the shop but I always find parking either at the Malakaoff(front or back), in front of the old fish market or the car park at the back of the Bargain Centre!! No further to walk than parking at the old swimming pool and walking to the Street.

I think something new has opened in the Crystal Cave.

That seems to be the Managers favourite line at the moment, we'll wait and see what his excuses are when they start driving prices up, which will happen.

hmm, does that mean if I go into tesco and ask for the ingredients for my daughter's favourite african and jamaican dishes to be stocked they'll do that too. It's been a long time since we've had a good goat curry.

tbh I very rarely use tesco as I don't drive, I find world tastes really handy for that exact same reason, it's really handy if on the bus.

I also like the fact that I can ask for advice in world tastes (not that they seem to be able to help with persian foods) can you imagine the staff in tescos being able to advise on which flour to use for Parathas? (wonderful for packed lunches).

I would just love Lidl to come up here I miss good quality german & italian meats - I find the poor selection in tesco rather off putting, I like my meats to have more meat than water.
