paulb
funny enough the burnley tesco sold them frozen. the Asian food has been on sale for less than a week. how can that put someone out of business. like all new things it will wane in popularity. its new. now if they were to use there expert knowledge maybe tied in with the wife's cooking skills they may beat tesco. its there other shop that they need to worry about. MJ
if I'm feeling lazy I do buy them frozen (ie most of the time). What I would be intregued by is if tesco do fresh pastries/sweets, I'm too lazy to make my own and most packeted ones start to taste stale within a few weeks.Anyway, I'll be hitting the chinese supermarket, asian food stores and african spice shop this weekend so it'll be a while before I'll be buying anything up here. You're correct it won't put them out of business today but can you not see from reading the report that it will put them out of business shortly? TeeAyBee
Given the headline on the front o da Times will Tesco cover that up too! Interestingly today when I did the shopping the papers were piled up at the checkouts with the headline clearly visible. I'm pretty sure they're more concerned about selling the local paper than what is actually written in/on it.
lerwick
I think we should shut tescos, put the coop back to frank williamsons shop, get rid of all the big fishing boats, go back to setting haddock lines get rid of colour tv and build a picture house. Oh well one backward step out of six is not bad.

Spinner72
From www.shetlandtimes.co.uk "Responding to World Tastes’ concerns, Mr Clelland said Tesco was simply responding to what its customers asked it to put in the shop. “They’ve asked for upmarket foodstuffs and Chinese and Asian groceries are part of that. We’re just concentrating on delivering the store that our cusÂtomers have asked us to deliver." I'd be very interested to see the market research that resulted in the stocking of identical niche products to an established retailer. That seems to be the Managers favourite line at the moment, we'll wait and see what his excuses are when they start driving prices up, which will happen. Cheers Why would he need an excuse? If they start driving prices up, people will just revert to the online/mail order/trip south shopping they did before Tescos expanded. No big deal and only Tescos to lose out. Something I've been wondering regarding the World Foods thing - I haven't visited the shop as its just not my thing, however, I may try something different when doing the helly errands and throw in some ot Tesco's Asian range. Now, I don't doubt for a minute that Tesco's are selling the most popular, centrally sourced, generic "world foods", like they do with all their stock. Isn't that an oppoutunity for a specialised shop to supply higher quality "world foods" to those of us who get a taste from the generic cheap stuff? Salmon
“I just feel gutted about Tesco doing that to us, really gutted,†she told The Shetland Times this week. “This is the beginning of the end really. We haven’t got a hope in hell.†She believes – rightly or wrongly – that her tiny grocery business has been targeted by Britain’s biggest retailer. She said the big supermarkets “wipe out the little man†and she warned there would be worse to come for local businesses if Tesco expands with fuel sales and another shop extension. The tiny grocery business has not been targeted....the store manager is telling the truth, the current layout and stock are a reflection of requests from a survey carried out amongst the Shetland public. You ask for petrol at the UK Mainland equivalent price, if it's workable Tesco will provide it in the future, not to put the small petrol pump owner out of business but to provide a service that attracts customers to the store. 10/10 Tesco "It's 2010 don't go belly up ....evolve"
Guest Raven007
Id say the ltca and shop owners have met their match this time , not quite the same as bullying Chris Hodge and forcing his buisness to close ! After the poor man lost virtually everything he worked for ! What goes around comes around ! How i miss The Chris Hodge warehouse and his little mini bus doing the rounds , His adverts on SIBC , His little Cafe With the Cheapest grub in Shetland and dammed good too ! Who knows what we could be enjoying at the warehouse now if the select few hadnt conspired to bring him down , He did provide a good service and filled a gap in the market and showed a willingness and drive to give us the customers the best deal he could. Please Come back Chris !

Guest Anonymous
OK salmon with your obvious business accumen please explain how a country grocers can evolve in the face of tesco's undercutting, or world foods with the limited customer base that is a fact of life in Shetland. Please enlighten us oh great one.And please explain how tesco selling petrol at mainland prices would not be unfair to local garages seeing as local garages pay 9p/litre more for their petrol wholesale than you pay at the forecourt in aberdeen. Frances144
Where was this survey out of interest?
Briar
Survey was conducted at the store entrance/exit mainly. At least this way they were asking existing customers what they wanted to see in a shop they already used. If them responding to their customers in the way requested results in increased/new custom, then obviously they have used their survey results wisely. They did not tout door to door to try and drum up new customers, they let the media hype and word of mouth do it for them.
