Ghostrider
It's been nice to hear so many points of view on the subject of us opening a store in Shetland. I'm having a hard time accepting that Tesco could be bothered to trawl internet forums at 1am on a Wednesday morning....they must pay the night shift extremely well, or something.... north
The kindest thing you can do to a Chicken is kill it and eat it. Same applies to Sheep! The kindest thing you can do to either living creature in the above statement is.... release it from your grip .....dork, get a life. The same applies to fish! Yeah I was smelling the distinct smell of bull crap there as well, especially with the pishy low resolution logo. If Iwas going to impersonate anyone on an internet forum it would be Jesus and I'd swear and say I liked buckfast to get a flame thread going. Impersonating tesco, it's a little sad. I can't wait for Gordon Brown to come on here and reassure us Britain is in great shape for the coming financial uncertainity. Can some change the thread title to "we might not really want a tesco but they're here anyway"
PJ of Hildisvik
Tescos have stated that their national pricing policy will apply here after all.No doubt some local retailers will not like that, but i think it's about time , we the Shetland public got a fair deal for once.Perhaps some of the shops could increase sales by making their shop fronts more attractive by painting them up and putting up new signs.I think parts of commercial street look really run down and tired, and 30 years out of date. Opening times fit for the 21st century might help! christ knows what tourists think.
breeksy
Yes, I have to say good on Tesco for sticking to their national pricing policy here. I'm sure that it will make a big difference to people with limited budgets, and with current price increases as they are it's all needed at the moment. Frances144
christ knows what tourists think. I'll tell you what I overheard three tourists saying yesterday, whilst walking down Commercial Street..... "Is that all there is? Oh" I think this Tesco pricing policy will make local retailers sit up and think! Perhaps some could even concentrate on their staff's customer service skills to entice the shoppers to spend their money locally.
man of kent
Tesco promise "dramatic drop in prices" As quoted on the Shetland News today (9th).If this is true then it has to be a good thing for shoppers. One of the sore points for me when I come home is the expensive prices for all things not just food or petrol. However a word of warning, Tesco do have a bit of a reputation for lowering prices, killing off local competition even selling at a loss and then the prices go up to where ever they want them to be. Hopefully this will not happen in Lerwick, lets hope the Coop will be able to compete and then the public will gain - for once.

What evidence do you have of this? I've mentioned before that I've used the Tesco on-line shopping system (not in Shetland I'd hasten to add) and the prices are the same countrywide regardless which store your order is filled from. I've said before I'm not pro Tesco but I am keen that everyone should have the choice to shop where they want. Part of this decision may be based the companies reputation but people need facts to base this decision, I wouldn't base my decision on a rumour from a bulletin board. ianboy1
Tesco promise "dramatic drop in prices" Pete Bevington 9 July, 2008 SUPERMARKET giant Tesco will cut the cost of groceries in Shetland putting pressure on other retailers when they open their superstore in Lerwick next Monday. Britain's largest retail chain yesterday (Tuesday) confirmed they would be introducing the same prices at their Lerwick store as customers throughout the rest of the country enjoy. Two months ago Tesco representatives told Lerwick community council that customers would see "a dramatic drop in prices", acknowledging that this would have "a detrimental effect on other small businesses as well as the Co-op", according to minutes of the meeting on 28 April. At the time the company was considering whether it could absorb the extra cost of transporting goods up to the isles, but yesterday Scottish corporate affairs manager Douglas Wilson said their national pricing policy would apply. "There was a review of the cost of transportation, but we have a commitment to our customers. There is an increased delivery cost to the island but we have to absorb that," Mr Wilson said. While local consumers appear delighted at the news, local shopkeepers are worried about the extra competition.Janet Davidge, who chairs the Shetland Retailers' Association, said: "I think the public will be ecstatic but I worry about the retailers, the small family run businesses that can't possibly compete because it's not a level playing field." Mrs Davidge said she did not think people realised how fragile the local shops were. "We are just holding our own, but I don't think it would take much. We couldn't take a couple of broadsides from anybody." However Lerwick community council chairman Jim Anderson said he thought the greatest threat to the local shops was the internet and that rising fuel prices should protect country shops from Tesco's cheap goods. "Folk in the country are not going to come to Tesco to buy their messages because of the price of fuel. Even if their messages are two or three pounds less and you don't have to go far in any car to have lost that saving. "Everyone I have spoken to bar some of the retailers is very excited and very happy that Tesco have come in."
Roachmill
Infiltrator, there's plenty more material on the net (I know, I know) and there's even a book on the subject. Here's a collection of Tesco stories (only ones in Scotland.... there are a lot more nationally) of what may be down the line for Shetland. Tesco aren't the only ones responsible for "price flexing" though. A £20m report done back in 2000 named and shamed several of the big boys... the CO-OP included. The same site linked above has some interesting reading on the possible impacts of supermarkets.
Infiltrator
Thanks Roachmill - but I see nothing on that site related to the alleged story that Tesco will increase prices locally once they've shut down the local competition. Most of the stories relate to their aggressive drive for market share - that's what business is about though. It wasn't them it would just be someone else.As far as I can see on that site they haven't done anything unlawful - they're just more ruthless than their competitors.
