Ghostrider
I would almost be willing to put money on the fact that the local Dairy would choose not to supply Tesco, rather than supply them at a Tesco dictated price, but time will tell. Girzie
We are a captive audience here but can still pick and choose what we want to buy and where we want to buy it. Maybe we should all stop girnin and just get on with living....
Guest ShetlandBlue
Roachmill Lets face it this isn't really a debate from any side is it? Sheepshagger. Congratulations on your 30 years, makes you an old hand. So have you seen the wholesaler invoices? The fact is on FOODSTUFFS other than loss leaders the margin is 40% that is fact. they may make higher on white goods and other items. Oh by the way I have looked at Tesco accounts and yes they could return those profits on 40% margin. Remember they pay poorly not only on shop floor workers but also buyers and admin staff, they screw their employees too. The real rules of busines, look after number 1. Hope you made a small fortune from your 30 years of retail experience, but some how I doubt it.
Salmon
TESCO do not operate on a 40% mark up, the real average is between 13% -15% on food products... with up to < 30% on non food products hence the expansion over the years into the non-food market. One of the few local products i'm very interested in is "Shetland Soap" , a very good product range and has a very big future....thoughts. Roachmill
^^If I want Shetland Soap I'll go to the Street ta. You missed answering a direct question a couple of pages back Salmon:Can you promise everyone that you won't hike the prices back up once competition has been eliminated claiming, "We're sorry but we just can't absorb the freight costs any more"?And the petrol station you say is coming... that'll be Sound, right? You'll need to make them a very good offer me thinks.RoachmillLets face it this isn't really a debate from any side is it? It certainly isn't if everyone tells anyone that disagrees wi them to "put up or shut up". Anyway... Looks like the CO-OP may be picking up their game. I saw a member of staff freely offering to pack someone's bags today. That's a first And no, the shop wasn't dead at the time either. I wonder what impact tesco opening until 10 will have on the likes of Mustards and Bolts. Somerfields started opening til 9 no long afore they sold up. I can easy see the aforementioned shops closing early if trade drops off. It'll give them more time to polish their Mercs I suppose.
Medziotojas
Hope you made a small fortune from your 30 years of retail experience, but some how I doubt it. I find myself in the unusual position of defending Sheepshagger. 30+ years in the retail business and still going strong; I happen to know this for a fact. Anyway, I'm off topic once again, back to Tesco.

breeksy
That kind of attitude towards discussion forums would kill them all off! If you are ambivalent towards Tesco, then why bother reading the 504/505/506 posts - why not just ignore the thread and read something that you regard as being worthy of discussion? Savior of the Shetland economy. They're a ferkin joke. They are not the saviour of the Shetland community and no-one is saying that, but they are a breath of fresh air, and they are not holding a gun to anyone's head to buy anything. of course they are making a profit, because what they are doing they do well, and with enthusiasm, something that is sadly lacking elsewhere.. Local products ... Mmmm remember when Sommerfield took over? they suddenly stopped taking in stock from Macnabs Kippers! one article in the Shetland Times was all it took to sort that one. Plus big bad Tescos have doubled the staff .. and paying the existing ones more money .. whoops can't have that that puts more money into the community
Rasmie
Surely the value of an item is how much you are willing to pay for it.If someone is willing to pay a pound then why charge 50p.Is that not supply and demand?? If you are on a budget, like most, you will buy what is cheapest. If you have money and a conscience you will buy from the most ethical source. perhaps you can also give donations to our poor Shetland Dairy farmers and Salmon moguls ? JAStewart
If Shetland doesn't want a Tesco, why did Tesco make £103,000 on the first day? Cause people want a Tesco.
Ghostrider
If Shetland doesn't want a Tesco, why did Tesco make £103,000 on the first day? Cause people want a Tesco. Hmm....Wella, if approx 3000 customers had spent £65,000 inTesco by 5pm, and they only had a full days take of £102,000/£103,000, then, assuming of course that the average spend per customer was roughly similar between 5-10pm as it had been between 9-5pm, no more than 5000+/6000 Shetlanders could have "wanted" Tesco, which is no where near a majority of Shetlanders. Soooo, on the basis of a democratic principle, it could be legitimately said that 'Shetland does not want Tesco'. Ooops, hold up, I'm arguing against my own earlier argument now....oh well, not entirely out of place on this thread.
