Kermit and co have some serious competition up here.

Cue Me! :)

Are you sure there's not been a recent hike in the price of milk? I bought a litre of milk for £1.04 at tesco yesterday. It did seem dearer than normal to me but it's the same price as the Co-op were selling it at today.

Surely the good old Co-op are not learning off big bad Tesco! :?

For the record, a 1 litre carton of Shetland milk at the Co-op is 79p....

Plus big bad Tescos have doubled the staff .. and paying the existing ones more money .. whoops can't have that  that puts more money into the community

Haven't Tesco only doubled the staff by having the majority (?) of people work part time on 11 - 15 hour weeks?

That may be with their new staff .. I don't know.

But I do know they increased the contract hours of the existing staff if they wanted.

I think shopping is all a matter of personal choice and I would rather have staff smiling, talking and trying to be helpful, than unhelpful, unsmiling and too fed up to pass the time of day. Well done Tesco and staff, went in Monday pm was met with a light airy shop bristling with folk and not a word of complaint about waiting, floor staff helpful with queries checkout staff exhausted and under pressure but still smiling and polite. Am looking forward to shopping there again. Stop trying to work out the math to prove a point, the point is, there's choice back in Shetland for supermarket shopping, and I still shop in rural shops as I always done over the last 16 years thank you very much !!!!! :D :D Smiles and good manners cost nothing

Usually when the shelves were empty it was because the boats/planes etc. had got delayed/cancelled. That's not the fault of either Somerfield or the Co-op. That's the norm when it comes to living on an island - being stuck with little food etc. coming in for a day or two because there are no boats.

I agree with that totally i worked at the lerwick co-operative for 3 yrs and seen that happen more times than i'd like to remember im sure tesco will experience the same problem.I still work for the c-operative too but on the mainland

Going into Tesco on opening day was a " Breath of Fresh air "

No tripping over empty boxes that someone was too lazy to put away....

Fresh fruit and veg ...and a very extensive range....Polite Friendly staff who have obviously been re-trained....

I have lived on an Island a lot smaller than Shetland and know too well what happens when the weather hits, but you store up for such events ...

I also support the rural shops as much as I can ...but you can only support a shop as long as they have the stock in....too many times you are given the reason of the " Weather " ...Like someone else said shopping is a matter of personel choice and it should be up to the individual where and when they shop....not everyone would have made it into Tesco on the first day....but those who did were obviously impressed with it ....

^^If I want Shetland Soap I'll go to the Street ta. You missed answering a direct question a couple of pages back Salmon:

me wrote:

Can you promise everyone that you won't hike the prices back up once competition has been eliminated claiming, "We're sorry but we just can't absorb the freight costs any more"?

And the petrol station you say is coming... that'll be Sound, right? You'll need to make them a very good offer me thinks.

Answer to a direct question..... "Shetland is further up the motorway than Watford but all mainland offers will still apply in Shetland"

"We're sorry but we just can't absorb the freight costs any more"?

That sounds so Shetland past, hence , Shetland has paid more for it's products.... in the blind belief it must be grateful that someone has made the effort to supply us with products having made that over burdened investment in the hope there is a profit at the end of it.

These days have gone the same way as the Klondykers.

Welcome to the United Kingdom Super Market Club

ps.

Shetland Soap is a product range that has the potential to become of National interest. not just in a local corner store.

If TESCO need to attract even more custom to their store, a petrol station will be in the equation, no matter what anyone says.

Relax and enjoy.

^^ A spy informs me that when she was in Tesco's on Thursday morning, she couldn't get half the things she'd planned on buying, they were all sold out. Maybe it was just bad luck that what she happened to be needing was coincidentally largely the same list as they had run out of, and it was not reflected in eveyone's experience across all the stock. But needless to say she's less than enthusiastic to make the trip again anytime soon, especially as it had cost her around £6.00-£7.00 in petrol.

Some level of stock control issues are to be expected with a new shop etc etc, but you'd have hoped that someone of Tesco's size would have erred well on the side of caution so as minimise any negativity for customers, and had a contingency plan to fast track in additional stock of lines where demand was considerably more than anticipated.
