KOYAANISQATSI
We could encourage them to come, then we could place an advert in the times to encourage all these roving gangs of hoodies to do their shoplifting there. Bog eyed, disinterested staff would make it a prime target for this. This would help keep tescos in check and give the disenchanted youth something to do that would keep them off the Street. typhoon_2099
I decided to say no tae this wan. It's great here in Dundee, there's lots o tesco value stuff (perfect for the student types i.e. me) and there's no many other supermarkets aroond Dundee (there's an Asda somewhere an a Lidl a bit up the road from me, but I'm never that impressed we it). There's actually 4 tescos I can think of aroond here (metro in the centre o toon, riverside, kingsway, and the wan by the megabowl which used to be an Asda if I mind right) So it's really a case o bein the big dog aroond here. However, if they were to start up in Lerwick somewhere, they'd end up pullin customers away fae the coop an the other wan (what's there enoo? I never go tae it, an I'm in Dundee at the minute) So all 3 would struggle profit-wise I would think. It would also have an adverse effect on the street. Tesco does everything you can think o, includin the kinda stuff you can find at the street. Maybe if the supermarket (???) at soond closed an Tesco moved there I'd be ok we it, but really we widna need 3. I heard an interesting quote the in 20 years tesco would be like the companies you see in films set in the furture where everything is owned by 1 mega-company (can't think o wan aff the top o me heed) and it seemd aboot right. P.S. Did the tesco boss just throw a dart at the map o Britain for somewhere new tae conquer or are we the last stop?

Tesco does everything you can think o, includin the kinda stuff you can find at the street. Not sure about that. Took a walk along the street this morning and all the shops bar one are in niche markets and will not lose much to a Tesco store. The exception is Mackays who would suffer perhaps terminal damage if Tesco sold their clothes and household linens range in store.

I appreciate that as a student shopping is not your first priority, but… in addition to the four Tesco stores which you mention (also new little Tesco Express in the Ferry) there are two huge Asdas – the old one in Kirkton and the newer one at Milton of Craigie - there is a vast Sainsbury’s 3 mins from me at Claypotts, a number of little Somerfields about the place and 2 Lidls which do all sorts of good cheap no-frills student stuff. With a car, a family to feed and all that choice I stick to Tesco’s Riverside which to me offers best value and range (which I miss if I'm shopping in Lerwick). But it doesn’t seem to stop all the others opening new stores – M & S Simply Food in the Ferry! – and continuing to do business. [/i]

Most planning approvals for out of town supermarkets south have conditions limiting the amount of ‘non food’ retail floorspace they are allowed. I’m pretty sure the same applies to Somerfield and the Co-op and would be applied to Tesco if they decided to build in Lerwick. I’m sure most folk in Shetland would welcome the improved choice a Tesco would bring, but I doubt whether the population is big enough to sustain a third supermarket. I’d be more concerned about the impact on country shops in Shetland than on traders on the street.

I’d be more concerned about the impact on country shops in Shetland than on traders on the street. I suspect Tesco would fight, at appeal if necessary, for a pretty generous non-food quota - there is almost nothing legal, other than furnishings, that they don't seem to offer. They'd be a real threat to quite a few smaller businesses selling everything from computers through clothes to books and cards, as well as (I suspect) the healthy crop of butchers, bakers, fishmongers and florists that Lerwick currently supports. They do what they do so very much better than Somerfield or the Co-op and they are totally driven by market share - the fact that there are two supermarkets here already will worry them not a bit. They would probably hit the Street to some extent, but perhaps have even more effect on the various businesses elsewhere in both town and country. Would the net result be greater happiness? I'm not so sure. There are other supermarkets - Waitrose in particular, but perhaps also Sainsbury's - that concentrate more on food and that have a better relationship with local suppliers. DamnSaxon
^^^Lidl or Aldi, both dead cheap (some questions about the workers' conditions though). I was astonished to discover that apparently Aldi are the UKs second largest supplier of PCs - and they're not bad for the price either.

scrutineer
a yes from me ...... SWMBO works for them down here maybe if they opened up in shetland she could get a transfer and we'd move seriously though , there are not a particularly caring employer which will probably suprise no-one but many of the problems come from their choice of manager rather than a head office policy IMHO i used to work for sainsburys - and they were just as bad
