cheryl.hughson
Tesco have got their own way again with the planning permission for a big illuminated sign being accepted. My opinion is that they do not need a sign, the store is pretty obvious as it is.
Spinner72
I would suspect the sign will be used to highlight current offers etc, which i think is practical and useful.
cheryl.hughson
I'm not too fussed about what its used for, what i'm pointing out here is that its unneccesary since it's already a very obvious shop in a very obvious location, they don't need massive signs to attract attention that they already have. Spinner72
Assuming its to give info on offers etc, then thats something useful for the public as opposed to themselves. You can easily see the store, but not whats in it
Roachmill
I too am confused about this 4m(!) tall illuminated sign. According to this article the application may well have been turned down by the roads dept. if it *wasn't* illuminated. Why? Is this sign to be plonked in the middle of a road that it needs lighting up? Surely it doesn't need lighting up so drivers can easily see what's on it. They should be watching where they're going... especially as it'll be right next to our biggest roundabout. Folk have a hard enough time minding which lane / indicator to use, let alone checking out tescos latest loss leader. I've nothing against tesco themselves putting up an illuminated sign. Just illuminated signs in general. They're gawd awful things wherever they are!
Muppet
http://www.shetland.gov.uk/planningcontrol/apps/pdfs/2008_244_ADV/2008_244_ADV_Drawing_No_L1-003-Rev-D_Proposed_Site_Signage_AMENDED.pdf That plan shows a 4m high sign within the Tesco site at the corner nearest the roundabout (bottom right hand corner of the drawing). No offers on it, just an information sign really. On the subject of Tesco signs. Whats that sign at the exit all about? The one that says trolleys will stop beyond this point. What's gonna stop them? So a 4m tall illuminated sign right next to the biggest roundabout for hundreds of miles is a good thing for road users because it's lit up? On the subject of Tesco signs. What's gonna stop them? They have the same sign at Tesco in Kirkwall but they do work outside the car park there because I met a trolley load of teenagers whizzing along the pavement towards the skatepark last Saturday. However, they may have some kind of device which measures the distance from the shop because the next day the trolley was upside down in the Peerie Sea about 50 yards further along.... BigMouth
Best thing to do is put the tesco trolley in one of those pound trolleys from Co-op and see how far you can get with it. Co-op and Tesco working in partnership in Lerwick
JustMe
I too am curious about the "trolley stops" sign and I am also curious about the "minicabs" sign. We have taxis which I guess could sit outside Tesco in the hope of some casual trade and private hire cars that have to be called so where do minicabs fit in the scheme of things.
