There is a woman in Hal burgess that does them. My sister got one done and it's brilliant!

From what ive heard, she is ment to be really really good.

She has just set up her studio at her house and is fully booked for the next wee while.

i have two friends thats had tattoos from her and they are pretty good, nothing special. both tattoos she did to my friends had writing in them and not to sound rude but the writing really lets down her tattooing skill

Hi

I know there are a few tattooists mentioned on here already but I would like my tattoo done properly first time. A friend from school designed me a custom tattoo about 12 years ago, unfortunately Iv lost it so I need someone to re draw it. I have been told by a few people that I would need a skilled artist due to my design, the colours and shading. I also have a very light scar and a skin condition. (I know I have spent the past 12 years considering if its a good idea or not, and waited to see if I would grow out of it. I have also spoken to a doctor who says a good tattooist should be able to tattoo me even with my skin condition.)

I would like advice on what questions to ask, how to know if someone is good or not. Any kind of guidelines on approx price, its no more than 5cm square and 3 colours.

Cheers

your best bet is to travel south to a good quality tattoo artist to discuss what you want done, where and the scarring. to be honest i would not trust anyone up here to tattoo me hence why i say travel south

pricing really depends on the detail in a tattoo and location (but in my guess it could cost from £30 > £150)

to see if someone is a decent tattoo artist you can have a look at their professional portfolio most tattoo artists have several years worth of portfolios to show if asked

dont go to someones house to get it done, go to a clean studio!!!!!

if you know what design type it is (e.g tribal, oriental, new skool, old skool etc...) do a search on google for tattoo artists that specialise in that types of drawings/tattoos

I'm not a tattooist, nor do I have any tattoos, but I would like to know why zebiddy came up with this comment?

Why do you say that? Is there a problem with Shetland tattooists

And why don't you capitalise your fecking I'?

I have to disagree with a couple of points by Zebiddy....I had a tattoo done up here done by Marvin Jamieson, when I went home to Ireland and showed the work Marvin had done to my usual tattooist and some other artists there, some of whom have been in the Tattoo business for 3 decades with an excellent reputation behind them they were extremely impressed with Marvins work, commenting on how great his his fine line work and shading is. Also you don't necessarily have to go to a studio to have a safe clean professional tattoo, I have had work by 3 different artists, some of who have been in their own home before they got a studio, another would come to my home with all their equipment and others in a studio. I have seen some utterly crap tattoo's done by artists in well advertised studios.

It is a very personal thing and not everyone is going to like your personal choice or style but that is exactly the point. it is personal and is as individual as you are.

I dont think Marvin is working at the moment but the best thing you can do is research work by individual artists, either here or south. each has thier own styles and they all have preferences to the type of work they particularly like doing.

Good luck with it Lost.....

Hi thanks for the replies so far.

I'm starting to wonder if my idea needs too fine a detail? I have described my design to a tattoo artist who said it was possible but suggested I get something from the book as my first tattoo. (That didn't impress me as I want my tattoo as it means something to me! and its the old one I'm getting!!)

Any one have any idea on what is/isn't possible regards detail, for example if I wanted an outline of a 5 pointed star approximately 6 - 8 mm point to point would this be possible??

Hey Lost.

There is no such thing as too much detail in a Tattoo. The size of your tattoo dictates how much detail you can have. If the tattoo is small with a lot of detail it will look a mess in years to come as the lines do thicken with age. A five pointed star 6-8mm is possible however from a distance won't look like a star due to size. It can be done thats why there are different size needles that suit each piece of art that you do.

As for scarring, It depends on age of scar and size and can be worked around, This comes down to placement. If you have execma and conditions of a like it would not be possible, dry skin or heat rash or fungal skin conditions are tattooable, Also a good tattooist does not have to be in a studio, As long as needles are new and disposed of after every client, equipment is properly cleaned, the area you work in is sterile, you have proper medicare before during and after tattoo, disclaimer forms. I can go on but wont bore you. Oh and uses good quality ink as a good artist can also be judged by the quality of the black ink he/she uses as there are many so called black tattoos that are more blue and faded due to lack of effort/quality.

marvin was the best tattoo artist up here but due to illness he has had to give it up. plus i dont really like the idea of going into someones home to get a tattoo done as it will be less clean (could pick up infections etc..). its my own personal choice but i would not get a tattoo done anywhere else but a studio.

i dont capitalize my i because im not the grammar police but you seem to be
