Sam
Regardless of if they are effective or not, the police are seen to be doing something. In terms of PR this is exactly the kind of thing the police are keen on. Like dawn raids and annual campaigns - it's all media orientated. A lot of dawn raids for drugs take part too. its a national way to catch people- one place most of us are at 5 am - is in our beds! its not a new thing this its been comon practice for decades- im sure you would not complaine abut the drug dealers human rights if he was selling drugs to you kids. Well would be there helping the police!
breeksy
I guess the new one is to replace the young black lab (was it woody?) that quite a lot of of time and money was spent on training up - before they discovered that he couldn't sniff drugs.... ChristopherWilliamThomson
Perhaps this has already been mentioned. Surely the simple way around the dogs is to take a car? As far as I am aware, the dogs only sniff foot passengers, and if they do check cars I am pretty sure the smell of the car deck is enough to put them off? peesterleestee
I really do wonder who they are trying to kid with all this carry on about the wonderful sniffer dogs. Do they really think that the bulk of the drugs coming into Shetland is taken in by either a foot passenger off the North boat or in person off an aeroplane? I tend to agree i think its more of a PR exercise than anything else.
Rasmie
I've seen the dug get someone. very impressive. The dog was far too placid tho' should have chewed his stoness off. There's too many people trying to make a living by selling our kids drugs. If the dog helps deter the dealers and couriers from paying us a visit then they are worth every penny. peesterleestee
Not disagreeing about that, but i must have led a sheltered life as i have never been aware of drug dealers trying to sell "kids" drugs! i did not realise this was the case in Shetland

Do you mean the goverment sanctioned off-licenses or tobacconists or perhaps you mean the idle GPs who dish out harmful drugs willy nilly for free. Buzz is the golden lab. Trainer and dog/s have to go south for regular training/assessment sessions. If they didn't cut the mustard, they wouldn't be in use... turrifield
What exactly is educational about taking sniffer dogs in to schools? Is it the old don't take drugs children because we have these wonder dogs that will track you down? This sort of scare tactic approach doesn't work. Rasmie
I am afraid that Shetland is not haven free from drugs. In the past at least people who are allegedly dealers have been seen loitering around even country schools. And yes people who supply alcohol to under age persons are just as bad. Yes, and even the parents who think that by giving their offspring a bag of beer to go to a teenage dance in the mistaken belief that it will make them less likely to try any of the other drugs. So underage drinking is bad but permited drinking is fine presumably because adults are responsible for there own actions. So why should these same adults not be resonsible when it comes to other drugs which are just as harmful as alcohol or in some cases less harmful. If responsible adults could buy from licensed responsible vendor then I could see your point. but the fact is buy buying illegal drugs they are supporting criminal activity and these criminal do not seem to regulate against selling to children and in fact may deliberately try todraw children in to increase demand. It is a different argument entirely whether adult use of recreational drugs should be legalised. There may be a lot to be said for it in fact... as long as we don't get exploited by the government in the way they exploited us with tobacco and alcohol sales - blatantly raising taxes from it to fight johnnie foreigner etc. Law is the law. if it is wrong become a politician and change it, which can happen if enough people agree with you and back you.
