Jerry_Dammers
A couple from the last ten years or so that deserve a wider audience. Feel free to add anything that you think might have gone unrecognised and is worthy of a repeat hearing. Njugle
Nice thought JD I saw a clip of the Royle Family the other day and just about fell off me chair when i noticed that Malcolm(?) was wearing a "What does anything mean, basically?" album promo t-shirt.8O Probably the nearest thing i've ever seen to these guys gaining the media recognition they always deserved. Unknown gems indeed.
Jerry_Dammers
Thanks Ngugle. Excellent clip there. Exactly the sort of thing I was hoping for when I started this thread. The Chameleons certainly deserve to be exposed to the biggest possible audience. I'd thought that from over 1000 users on Shetlink, there would be an awful lot of artists with a minimal fanbase in this community. All I'm hoping from this thread is that we can all share our own (possibly more eclectic) interests without crowding your forum with loads of new threads and, as a side benefit, possibly introduce the wider community to some fantastic music. Anyway, enough of the waffle, here's some Asian Dub Foundation. Caught them at Glasgow Green in 2000 and they're probably one of the best live acts I've ever seen. This is them doing Real Great Britain from the Community Music album. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KQsdfnbOevM
david
Black Box Recorder - The Facts Of Life Loved this song when it came out. I seem to remember Mark and Lard on Radio 1 being big fans of it. Sadly not many people know about it.
david
Mercury Rev - Holes. Great band that from who, from what I can tell, were never that popular. http://youtube.com/watch?v=GZSRWwmTSXk Sigur Rós - Glósóli. They became a little bit famous when one of their songs was used as the theme to the Planet Earth trailers, but they have plenty more really nice songs out there. Interesting videos too. http://youtube.com/watch?v=okLCurB1lJw
Malachy
Well, I'm going to have to be unfashionable and speak up for the great, wonderful, Randy Newman. He's a superb songwriter and yet his albums sell next to nothing. He has to make his money these days writing animated film soundtracks like Toy Story. He's an incredibly witty writer, and if you think Americans don't get irony, the reason might be that Randy Newman was born with enough for the whole country. YouTube doesn't have much of his stuff unfortunately, but here's a few samples Political ScienceThis is Randy looking, frankly, a bit strange, on the Old Grey Whistle Test. With free Slovak subtitles!http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8U2HZkHWTTg I Love LA (they used this as the 'theme song' at the LA Olympics - perhaps missing the sarcasm)http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aANWqzIJ6us My Life is Good (There's no other song quite like this) And a new one, the lyrics of which were published as a New York Times op-ed earlier this year. Sorry for overloading you with him but I think the world would be a better place if more people listened to Randy Newman!
Tomblands
I Love LA (they used this as the 'theme song' at the LA Olympics - perhaps missing the sarcasm)(** MOD EDIT ** - Removed YouTube video from this quote to ease congestion on their server ) "Look at the mountains, look at those trees, look at that bum, he's down on his knees". Malachy
I Love LA (they used this as the 'theme song' at the LA Olympics - perhaps missing the sarcasm) "Look at the mountains, look at those trees, look at that bum, he's down on his knees". Yes, quite! You'd have thought they might have noticed. Or someone would have pointed it out. But apparently not. And the great thing about that song is that, once you make that obvious realisation that it's not serious, the whole thing starts to fall apart. The character is clearly an squeeky clean poop tube. "That town's a little too rugged for you and me, you bad girl." Those last three words - totally unnecessary, but brilliant.
AndyVocoustic
Alamo Race Trackwww.myspace.com/alamoracetrack New band from Amsterdam - heard of them from a record store assistant when I was there recently. This song has a groove and a half and some great reverb guitar. Alamo Race Track - Northern Territory
in_vacanza
Not quite an unknown, but I always thought Jellyfish should have enjoyed far more success than they did.

mutopian
this takes me back to my first experience of seeing MTV at a mates house. Still love it to this day even though they didn't get a lot of airtime in the UK.
Jerry_Dammers
Certainly not the best recording, but here's Out Of My Hair And an interesting representation of Japanese music, it's the Pizzicato 5 http://youtube.com/watch?v=j94k1EjooZk Man, it's like it's 1996 all over again...
