Fifi
^^^ At least the second one doesn't appear to be overloaded with pop-up hellery like the original was. It was difficult to browse or take seriously something that kept of flashing the same message in your face every time you clicked on something, whatever you did.Unfortunately, the new forum seems to have been started without mentioning it on the old one. So anyone visting the old forum would think it is a current and valid forum. Also the threads are still open on the old one. This means that there have been a few posts, including a reply by a GP to Stuart's health article, added to the old forum. The Muckle Poll seems to have been a resounding success as well. It appears that there were 43 votes and of those votes, a definitive 91% voted in favour of the Muckle Poll. <39 votes> This is a clear mandate for forging a new partnership between the public and the local authority and will no doubt be invaluable in guiding the council in its decision making. http://www.shetland-news.co.uk/news_05_2007/Low%20turn%20out%20for%20Muckle%20Poll.htm
Pooks
I see that the Shetland Independent Newsletter has taken it upon itself to become Bloggers most active user. I would question how many of these blogs would be encroaching on copyright/moral issues. http://www.blogger.com/profile/13624073324201171300

Njugle
Might i remind users to kindly refrain from directly insulting other users, as per our T&Cs. It may be an opportunity for humour but 'do unto others' and all that. Thank you.

Re copyright - just checked one of the many blogs - http://shetlandindependentdiet.blogspot.com/ "All things in moderation is a great cliché for food especially: fundamentally we should have a varied diet of small amounts. Despite the many 'healthy eating' food brands and the different dietary courses that have popped up in the last few years, maintaining a balanced diet is a real struggle for most people. With fast food, pizza delivery and any number of other temptations that stand in our way every day, it's hard to know which advice is the best for each of us. I have been meaning to come here for a while to say that eating a balanced diet is not about losing weight." http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/pda/A1067889 "All things in moderation is a great cliché for food especially: fundamentally we should have a varied diet of small amounts. Fifi
I copied & pasted the Shetland Independent blog excerpt, then copied & pasted the BBC excerpt to see if there were any differences. But yes, I should perhaps just have put the links.

MuckleJoannie
I see that the Shetland Independent Newsletter has taken it upon itself to become Bloggers most active user. I would question how many of these blogs would be encroaching on copyright/moral issues. http://www.blogger.com/profile/13624073324201171300 I was rather alarmed to see my name appears twice in the list, then I realised that it has names of all the candidates for the SIC election, hence my name and that of my namesake from Levenwick being there. I clicked on a few but they are all blank. I received my request to contribute through the post about 2 days before the election although it was dated in early April. I never replied as that close to the election I was too busy and I suspect the other candidates were the same.
Fifi
I clicked on a few but they are all blank.I've only looked at some but there are entries for some of the blogs. In terms of councillors/candidates - there is an entry for Kenny Hughson, not sure if there are any others. Some of the blogs seem to be completely empty, other contain just links, others contain material copied from elsewhere. One interesting one is the 'Shetland Faiths & Religions' blog. http://shetlandindependentfaiths.blogspot.com/2007_03_01_archive.html This is another piece copied from elsewhere, however it promotes some over-the-top scare-mongering regarding the Sexual Orientation Regulations. http://www.ekklesia.co.uk/news/uk/070308sors The piece includes links to a propaganda video posted on Youtube in which a teacher appears to be teaching a class of small children about homosexuality in an explicit manner. The video appears realistic but is doctored with voices dubbed, promotional gay posters digitally added to classroom walls, etc. It is anti SOR and says it is an attempt to show what could happen in schools. It appears there was much controversy when the video was posted on Youtube and it was subsequently removed. There is an explanation here - http://www.mattwardman.com/blog/2007/03/29/sexual-orientation-regulations-demo-promotional-video/http://www.bloggerheads.com/archives/2007/03/the_cctv.asp What is interesting is that in Stuart Hill's responses to the outcry regarding Nelson Smith's article in the Shetland Independent Newsletter, he constantly dodged the issue of responsibility by claiming that it wasn't his or the newsletter's views - that it is independent and it was only publishing one viewpoint which the newsletter doesn't necessarily agree with. Well, although this article has the ubiquitous disclaimer at the top, it states it has been posted by 'shetland_independent_newsletter@yahoo.com'. It seems Stuart Hill is firmly pinning his colours to the mast this time..
Muppet
I see he's taken the page down. Why is it that if people are so willing to write or publish these views that they can't or won't justify their position? The Independant's two forums attracted plenty of criticism which neither Nelson Smith or Stuart Hill would answer (although both read and posted to it). Stuart's response of blaming the victim was particularly appaling. He may well have the strength of character not to allow himself to become a victim, but that is not so easy for some people, especially after a lifetime of prejudicial attitudes. The best use of the Newsletter I can see is as fodder for the district heating scheme!
