DeMascus
Here is screen-reader for windows for the bind/disabled. A commercial package such as jaws will set you back a pretty penny, so here in open source alternative. I haven't used it but i do intend on having a look at it, I will post more info when I do. http://www.nvda-project.org/index.html

DamnSaxon
If you use Windows and are fed up with the bloated, sluggish Adobe PDF Reader, try this: http://blog.kowalczyk.info/software/sumatrapdf/ I'm impressed.

MuckleJoannie
Quick Books have made a version of their accounting software avalable for free download. I downloaded it a couple of days ago and it seems to work ok for my business. The only snag is that it is a US version, so it needs a bit of working around if you are VAT registered. Gibber
Media monkey for mp3 management is the best bit of freeware I use. http://www.mediamonkey.com/ Portable apps comes second
Bigstan
Media Player.I love Winamp Codecs.I use K-Lite codec pack. Has just about every codec you'll ever need. Spyware removal.I use Adaware and Spybot - not necessary to use both but I'm a bit paranoid (as I'm sure everybody has told you behind my back ). PC maintenance (Disk clean up, registry cleaner etc.).Try CCleaner (Crap Cleaner). Helps stop your hard drive(s) getting clogged up. Antivirus.Another good free AV is Avast. I've been using it for over 3 years with no problems.

DamnSaxon
"Reclaim your privacy in an intrusive world" with - http://xerobank.com/ - the xB Browser is Firefox, locked down by experts so *don't* play with the settings unless you know more about security than they do (unlikely). It does its surfing through Tor, or (if you pay them) through their own network of anonymisers which are a bit faster, and either way it'll work very nicely off a USB stick. They also do xB Mail, for encrypted/anonymous emailing, xB VPN, and the xB Machine, a "hardened" Linux Live CD. For those old enough to remember, they used to be "Torpark". And - they're the only privacy enforcers I've found who have their own Ethics Advisor (!) - I like their attitude. Wouldn't visit my favourite pr0n sites with anything else. DamnSaxon
Prio is a nice little utility. Tweak your programs' process priorities (if you dare), and (mostly) it adds some quite useful information to the Windows Task Manager. Roachmill
^Yes indeedy. Handy little things like exactly where each process can be found on the hard disk, which service is running under each svchost.exe and what's got a net connection open (and to where). It's Windows only mind you.
MuckleJoannie
I would suggest to anyone who runs an organisation that employs people to look at the HMRC Employer CD ROM. This is issued free to every employer registered for PAYE each year with updates as necessary. It can do all the tax and National Insurance deductions, year end forms and electronic submission to HMRC. The only thing it doesn't do is payslips. By agreement with providers of payroll software it can deal with up to 9 employees. Payroll software is fairly expensive so this could be a useful saving
MuseOfLife
A lot of pdf creators do not support 64-bit OS. Month ago I have discovered Free PDF Converter in the net. It works perfectly on my 64-bit XP.

Dogbombs
Scribushttp://www.scribus.net/Desktop publishing package. Bit of a learning curve, but no more than with M$ Publisher. Native, high-quality PDF output.
