I'm not much of a News of the World reader myself but since your a fan of tabloid jibber jabber and were on the subject of the Portuguese police, here's some pickings for you.

Kate and Gerry McCann provoked the fury of the Portuguese authorities after it was revealed they had hired private investigators to help find their daughter Madeleine.

A senior judge said their actions could prompt charges of obstruction of justice in the hunt for the missing four-year-old who has not been seen since May 3.

Under Portuguese law, it is illegal to carry out independent inquiries into a case while a police investigation is ongoing. But it emerged this week that Mr and Mrs McCann hired investigators from Control Risks Group - who specialise in kidnap, hostage and crisis management - at the end of May.

Antonio Martins, president of the National Association of Portuguese Judges, told the newspaper 24 Horas: "It is still up to the state to carry out criminal investigation. That kind of activity has no legal standing.

"Anything that results from private investigation has no substance."

Mr Martins said the private detectives and even the McCanns themselves could be accused of "obstruction of justice".

Carlos Anjos, the head of Portugal's criminal police federation, added: "This can only be another diversion tactic from the McCanns. It is nothing but folklore.

A separate police source warned that the involvement of investigators may not only be illegal but could have a detrimental effect on the inquiry.

The head of the Portuguese police federation hit out at Kate and Gerry McCann today, accusing them of hampering the investigation into their daughter’s disappearance.

Carlos Anjos, head of Asfic, said there was little point interrogating the couple again because they would, as they are entitled to, refuse to speak.

"This is a difficult and complex case made worse by Madeleine’s parents attitude who do not facilitate or help the investigation," he said. "There is no sense in scheduling other interrogations as Kate and Gerry have already said they will speak no more.

"This case is here for a long time because there is no apparent motive and it will be very difficult to prove if it was homicide if Madeleine’s body is not found."

"They are arguidos, a status which allows them to remain silent and they have already said that they will make no more statements.

The appointment of the two leading lawyers is thought to be one of Portugal's most expensive defence teams for people who are only arguidos, or suspects.

'Madeleine case officer removed'

The Portuguese detective in charge of the Madeleine McCann inquiry has been removed from the case after accusing her parents of manipulating British police, it was reported.

Goncalo Amaral was reportedly taken off the case following his comments that Kate and Gerry McCann had been calling the shots by identifying lines of inquiry for Leicestershire officers.

The detective, who heads the regional Policia Judiciaria in Portimao, said British police had overlooked the fact that the couple remain suspects.

And he accused the McCanns of releasing new information each day in a bid to distract and confuse the 152-day-old inquiry.

Police reportedly said in a statement that Mr Amaral had been taken off the case but gave no reason for the decision.

Portuguese Justice Minister Alberto Costa refused to comment on the case, saying in reports: "We have to concentrate on the work, not on making comments."

Clarence Mitchell, the family's spokesman, said: "We're aware of these reports and we simply can't comment.

"Gerry and Kate have consistently said that they are happy to cooperate fully with the Portuguese authorities and will continue to do so no matter who is in charge of the Madeleine investigation."

So happy to cooperate that they refused to answer around 50 questions!!

KOYAANISQATSI, I've love to hear your response to this:

http://news.sky.com/skynews/video/videoplayer/0,,91210-1286358,00.html

The special report of Sky News about Madeleine's case promised to “separate fact from fictionâ€. But what it showed was that Sky News archives are badly organized and Mr. Martin Brunt is better creating fiction than reporting facts. Because important facts and steps of the investigation were completely ignored by Mr. Martin Brunt, with the obvious complicity of his editors

and not only but also:

McCann lawyer denies offer of a plea bargain

“Police were still questioning Gerry McCann when, already, his sister Philomena was telling Sky they had offered Kate McCann a reduced two-year sentence if she admitted to killing her daughter accidentally, hiding the body and then secretly disposing of it weeks later. On this occasion the police officers were right to be angry. Like many things said about the McCann affair over the past days and months, the story was wrong. There was no offer of a plea bargain. It had all been "a misunderstanding", the McCann lawyer, Carlos Pinto de Abreu, explained the following day.â€

Front page of the Express today. Interesting to note that the McCanns claim of 'contamination' has been taken into account and has had no impact on the findings.

http://www.dailyexpress.co.uk/posts/view/21471

British DNA tests were said to indicate that Portuguese police were correct to declare Kate and Gerry McCann suspects.

The forensic experts have been carrying out analysis of evidence collected from the McCanns’ holiday apartment and hire car. Searches using sniffer dogs in July led to the discovery of traces of bodily fluid in the boot of the car which was regarded as very significant.

Strands of blonde hair believed to be from Madeleine were also discovered in the car.

The McCanns did not hire the Renault Scenic until 25 days after Madeleine vanished, leading police to conclude that her body must have been carried in it.

But Kate and Gerry’s family have always insisted that any traces of Madeleine’s DNA found in the car got there innocently.

They have explained that the bodily fluids could have come from a pair of Madeleine’s sandals when the family moved villas. The hair could have got there from a pair of her unwashed pyjamas.

In addition, the car was also used to transport rubbish, including dirty nappies belonging to Madeleine’s brother and sister, from their villa to a nearby dump. A family friend said: “That car was used by many members of Madeleine’s immediate family. Items belonging to the twins were carried in the back so there is going to be DNA from blood relatives all over the place.â€

But sources within the forensic laboratory claim the new findings took into account possible contamination.

Last night a Forensic Science Service spokesman said: “Our work is on-going. We have been regularly in contact with the police conducting the investigation and our findings are routinely being passed on.

“We cannot discuss those findings. It would be for the police to decide what information – if any – should be released.â€

Christ - I'm prepared to keep an open mind - but if this post is going to deteriorate (!) to a series of cut and pastes from the most cerebrally challenged tabloids around, what's the point?

Any post opened with "front page of the Express today" shouldn't get past the filters.

Unless there's some deeply ironic point I'm missing....
