trout Posted March 4, 2006 Report Share Posted March 4, 2006 I was a smoker .. smoked quite heavily infact - but now don't smoke unless I'm totally legless and out and about. I can't wait until the smoking ban comes in cos I think I will then not smoke when I'm out at all, ever! Smoking is a drain on the NHS, and to be honest is a crap habit! I've heard that there are the equivalent of the speak-easy clubs in Ireland, such as there was in prohibition America at the beginning of the last century - though for smoking in rather as boozing. Pooks Posted March 7, 2006 Report Share Posted March 7, 2006 While I am not really that fussed about the ban I can't see why they didn't allow establishments that have two seperate areas to enforce one as non-smoking rather than an all-out blanket ban. Think about the pubs around Lerwick (and the rest of Shetland for that matter). Most of them have two bars, one lounge and one public. Make one for the smokers and one for them that opt not to. This does of course bring the question 'What about the bar staff?'. They would need to have a contractual clause that says that they do, or do not wish to work behind a smoky bar. This could of course discriminate against those that do not wish to work in such a place. I am all in favour of banning smoking in restaurants and the like. Foodstuffs and reek don't go well. The one thing I am worried about is this. When you feel the need to release one upon the world, don't you find it comforting to do so in the pub? it's noisy (so you won't be incriminated). You can do it in a space with lots of people around you (and hence blame other people). The smoke also helps mask the smell if you've just been at the Raba. No longer will rogue farters be as safe as they used to be. Seriously though. Having a smoking and non-smoking bar seperate doesn't make any sense. There is no inherent need to smoke - there is however an inherent need to not inhale polluted air. Why should someone have to compromise their health to enter and establishment, regardless of it's smoking status? I think a total ban will be one of the best things that's ever happened to Scotland. In a country that already has a very poor health record, this can only help. Also, for something that's meant to be geared towards socialising, doesn't it seem a bit daft to segregate smokers and non-smokers? Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Of more serious concern to cannabis smokers is the evidence that seems to be growing to show that cannabis is more dangerous than tobacco to smoke. (Hicks) Andy 8O Interesting question!! Has anyone ever seen the regulations? They could well relate to smoking tobacco. I did see an article which pointed out some anomolies with the legislation, which said that smoking would be banned in an enclosed smoking shelter, but not in a nuclear submarine. Says me having given up on 23rd May last year....Hypnotised People are also taxed to fund the NHS...in theory this move will, at least to a small degree, alleviate the pressure on the health service. Especially in the long-term, there is a good deal of evidence to suggest that it will reduce the number of heavy, and particularly casual, smokers.
