BigMouth
Is there only one road in Unst that goes to the disused base at Skaw?
MuckleJoannie
As far as I am aware there is only one public road. The cliffs at the side of the original one at Norwick collapsed so a road was made over the hill farther south. Driving on it feels like going over a peat road and it must be one of the steepest in Shetland.
BigMouth
Do you know if that road is also closed now?
crofter
I think the "peat road" route is still open to vehicles. The road up the side of the cliffs has been closed for a few years.
BigMouth
I think that I may have driven on this road. I remember a sign that had been put up by some comic that said Muckle Dipper. The sign changed the worried expression as I drove along listening to the car bottom out at times to a smile.
Unst_Uzi
Yes the road is still open and it does have the muckle dipper in the middle of it. I agree, it is probably the steepest road in Shetland. The road never gets any maintenance as there is only one house up in Skaw.
