bit - peerie puckle

byte- muckle puckle

kilobyte - peerie coarn

megabyte - glaep

gigabyte - muckle glaep

 

 

personal translator - knapper

spellcheck - knapaesy

 

Nice work, M .... esp. 'knapper' and 'knapaesy/ie' . Straight into my personal Shetland dictionary :D

Could mailbag be knapsack? ...bearing in mind people don't tend to write in the dialect.

 

And what about "Ludigrud Foy" for "Pop Idol" (I'm not entirely sure of the spelling but I've heard my mother use this term before. It's from the same root as luderhorn and it would probably translate to something like caterwaul).

Unfortunately, I don't have any Shetland reference books here, but I seem to remember reading a Rhoda Bulter poem many moons ago which I assume was about modernisation, however, only one line from it springs to mind. This may not be strictly accurate but it went something along these lines:

 

"An' a new fangled object tae swittle da laem" - referring to a dishwasher.

 

Therefore, we could have "laemswittler" for "dishwasher".

 

I have a feeling there may have been more terms for modern appliances in this poem. Anybody know the poem I'm talking about? I'd be interested to hear.
