A TV remote control is referred to by many names in Shetland.

Da Buttons, is very common, especially for some reason in Whalsay.

Da Clicker is another common name.

"Yun Bloddy Thing", as in "Whaur's yun bloddy thing we change da channel wi", is another commonly heard expression.

And I think 'birler' is making a case for the Shetland Dictionary (neologism section) :)

Even though "birlin'" is a Scottish word..? ;) :D

That's true enough, Fifi - but the point here is, it's a contemporary Shaetlin term for a tumble drier. Well, at least three folk claim to use it ... :)

Birl is no exclusively Scots either, cf. barrel etc ...

I don't live in Shetland, and we call the remote control the 'blipper' or the 'zapper'.

How about:

Inflatable mattrass - Windyflatchie.

Sometimes you don't need to make up a word, just revive an old one:

Wind Generator - Windyspael (I'd be surprised if some folk don't call them that)

Or even raid the cast-offs of standard English:

Radio - Wireless

:)
