mhutch
I often plot to overthrow the government whilst pissed. Yeah, but you've forgotten how you were going to do it by the next morning. and then the realisation you blown your revolutionary budget on alcohol duty , sausage , full sympathy
lerwick
Alcohol is a very easy product to produce yeast water and sugar. Home made wine cost abt 60p per bottle . Banning alcohol would only hurt the tax man. We would not have enough money in the economy to pay for police judges politicians etc if alcohol was banned. If it was up to me it would be banned now , get rid of these useless people it pays for.
NewMagnie
Obviously, this will never happen as the government makes way too much money from it, but since it (and fags) kill more people than all other drugs combined x 1000, why should it be kept legal?Opinions? Thoughts? Well if we're going to ban things that kill us but return a profit to the taxman - how about driving? Petrol seems to be one of the most dangerous, vigorously enjoyed and highly taxed fluids available.

If you take out the Alcohol bit.But you would also need to ban Imbeciles from the equation as well andthere would be very few cars on the road after that. So how would you get your post deliveredSupplies home etc etc

Guest Anonymous
I think that Beer at app £24 per gallon gives it a little competition.????? pint of beer £3, 8 pints £24 so you are saying that the total price of a gallon of beer is tax.The pubs would like you to think so but it clearly is not the case. Then we can look at the retail price 2.63gallon (a case of 500ml cans) of beer can be bought for less than £20, even less for the crap they sell in tesco. I offered the cost of a gallon of beer for comparison purposes. Where did I say that the total price of beer was tax? Beer has a Duty Rate of about 16p per Litre.1 Gallon = 4.5 Litres (approx) = 80p DutyVAT at 20% on a Sale Value 0f £24 = £4.00 That's £4.80 Tax/Duty per Gallon at the point of sale. How much Duty/Vat is on a gallon of petrol? Last information I had was 59p per litre DutyGiven that Unleaded is about £1.43p per Litre at the pumps4.5 * 1.43 (to get the gallon equivalent) = £6.43Duty per Gallon = 4.5 * 59p = £2.66p(Rounded Up)Vat per Gallon = £1.37Total Tax/Duty per Gallon = £4.03p Where you buy your beer matters of course but, it will not make o lot of difference to the overall tax take. Guest Anonymous
as a gallon of beer would last me longer than a gallon of fuel then the overall tax take for beer would be a lot less, but I take your point and I misinterpreted your original post. I think that Beer at app £24 per gallon gives it a little competition. Fair point, but I did say "one of" not "the" most, etc, etc... Para has a point though - take alcohol out of the equation and you'd make it less dangerous. That doesn't help with the "imbecile" equation of course. Of course its completely impractical - at leastuntil we all have peerie electric vans - I'm just kicking it in to stir a bit of debate. What else meets the criteria for banning, sticking with the formula that JAS sets? It needs to be: 1. Bad for your health 2. Freely and legally available 3. Taxed to b*ggery Booze and petrol seem to fit the bill nicely - what else?
